Try to Wade Out to the Surface

You start to kick against the mud, but as you move, it sucks you in more. First your hips are submerged. Then your waist, your chest . . . the more you struggle, the deeper you sink.

You keep your arms from touching the murk, because they’ll just get sucked down, too, and then you’ll be a goner. What can you do but wait?

Stop moving.
Call for help.
