K. Qua wins the Flash 5 Contest!

Lauren Oliver has picked K. Qua, author of Happen to Anybody, as the winner of the Flash 5 contest. Congrats, K. Qua! He’s won an Advanced Reader’s Copy of Delirium (in stores Feb 2011). The runner-up was Marisa withΒ Do You Remember?

Many thanks to our 3 other finalists (T.J. Timmins,Β Jessie Rohrer, andΒ Celeste), and everyone who entered Figment’s Flash 5 contest!

    • You can use any variation of the word…as long as “stagger” is the root of the word. Stagger, staggers, staggered, staggering – all OK. Staggerdly, staggeratiously – that might be pushing it πŸ˜‰

  1. I probably won’t win, but this was fun. Things like this are just puzzles to me. I tried to make this one have the biggest bang possible for the smallest buck.

    • (just help the admin)
read this (the last sentence in 4th paragraph)

“The winner will receive an advanced reader’s copy of her latest book, Delirium (in stores Feb 2011)!”

  2. The entry I submitted is 500 words on the dot, but with the addition of tags and a brief description, it is displayed as 530 words. Will I be disqualified for this?

    • No, you will not be disqualified. Actually, different word processors register different symbols and word bits as a different #s of words, but there is something that’s a little screwy in our system! We’re looking into it. Thanks πŸ™‚

  3. I wrote a short story and submitted it, but it didn’t show up with the contest entries (I put the tag “flash5”). Does this just take awhile, or did I not do something correctly?

  4. question: is there some kind of rule about explicit content… like will something that generally should not be for quote unquote ‘younger’ audiences be disqualified? or is everyone here old enough/mature enough?

      • ok i was just wondering. because my story hints at sexual activity but never actually says anything about body parts. oh wait. are morally iffy subjects not allowed either?

        • Sexual activity is no problem in entries, as long as it’s not pornographic (extremely explicit without context or character development). And morally iffy subjects are absolutely allowed, as long as their intent is not racist or homophobic – morally iffy subjects sometimes make for great writing. Hope this helps! -Lindsay

  5. I submitted my story last night at about midnight but it still has not appeared on the ‘contest’ page. I put flash5 as one of the tags. Did I do something wrong? Thanks!

  6. I submitted my story last night at about 930 central usa time, i still don’t see my story on the contest pages. I put flash5 as one of the tags, but it didn’t work. Is it there and I can’t see it?

  7. Oh no! On my contest entry it says I have 685 words, but when I did it in a word document it was only 488. Will it still qualify for the contest?

  8. How is the winner decided? Is it based off of the story most read, most commented, or based off admin decision? Not to discredit the people who have many hearted, but I would hate to see so many great stories overlooked just because no one has blogged about them.

  9. Hey, I posted my submission for the contest… I put Flash5 as one of the tags… Yet I dont see my writing? Did I do something wrong???!!!??? I am so technologically confused, I wouldnt be surprised…

    • Your writing should really be 500 words. We’ve fixed the word counter so that it’s accurate now. (If you published your story before yesterday, though, just go back into “Edit” and press “Save” at the bottom of the “Content” tab, and the word count will refresh and become more normal.) So do keep it below 500. Thanks! -Lindsay

  10. Hey…i posted my entry for the contest and put the tag as ‘flash 5’…but its not showing on the contest page…did i do something wrong??

    thx =D

    • Hi Shilpa – I see that you saved a story with “flash5” in the tags as a draft. Just go to the bottom of the “Content” tab and push “Publish Now” and you should be able to see it as a contest entry. Let me know if that doesn’t work! -Lindsay

  11. Hey everyone! I’m brand new to this site/sharing my poetry in general, would anyone please review my poem, it’s about 1-2 minutes and I could really use some feedback just to know what I can do be a better writer? Even a quick blurb would be so helpful πŸ™‚ thanks so much guys!

    • ok, this is not a promoting place. Go to the forum page, and find the forum your looking for…this is for questions only…

  12. Hi! I just wanted to confirm that my poem was submitted to the contest? Haha i’m sorry i’m confused as to whether it was accepted or not (i didn’t know where to look for that). thank you!!

    • Hi Tessa — next time just put the tag as “flash5, [whatever else you want]”, and it should show up. I edited your tags, so now you’ve officially entered! -Lindsay

    • Hey Shilpa — I noticed that you tagged it as “flash 5” not “flash5”, so I changed it, and it should show up now. πŸ™‚ -Lindsay

  13. When I wrote my story on a word account, it was, I think, like two words over the limit. But when I published my story here, it says I have 635 words! I really don’t want to be disqualified for this, please help!

  14. This is absolutely incredibly πŸ™‚
And to add to that, it’ll be chosen by my favorite author πŸ™‚
Can’t wait to see how this turns out.

  15. Hi Lindsay:
Like others ahead of me, I too don’t see my flash5 entry. What did I do wrong?
Plus I need to edit it and I cant figure it out, as you can tell, I am newbie πŸ™ on this site.

  16. I don’t think the rules are fair. I think all the entries should be read because not everybody is going to read everyone’s hard work. Choosing only the top popular entries people chose doesn’t mean they’re the only good ones.

  17. I have a simple (maybe dumb question), EST is a time zone thing but if you use GMT how many hours before/after is it then? I’m just intrested if I still have time to submit a reply as I live in GMT +1. ^^

    • Just “heart” the entires you like — the top 5 hearted stories will be judged by Lauren Oliver. You can heart as many entries as you want, until Friday at midnight EST. Hope this helps! -Lindsay

        • Amara, the reason we didn’t do that was to give all entries an equal chance of winning. If we listed by most hearted first, those entries would just keep getting hearted again and again, and then no one would ever read the least hearted entries, even if they deserve to be read. Hope this makes sense πŸ™‚ -Lindsay

  18. How do we know if our submission was requested? I certainly don’t feel like going through 45 pages of peoples work looking for the title of mine. I put flash5 or whatever in the tags in the writing but will I be notified if I was accepted?

  19. Hi there,

I’m really enjoying using Figment. I spotted the contest a little late and am wondering whether there will be another one soon. Will there be? πŸ™‚

  20. I’ve seen a lot of entries in this contest go above the word maximum. Some are even above 1k. So what would happen to those entries? Are they disqualified from the contest?

  21. ok so I submitted mine before the deadline but didn’t realize that I miss tagged it ( i did flash 5 and flash5). does this mean mine is not elligible for the contest? even thought it met all the other requirements?

  22. I tagged my entry as “flash5” but it’s not coming up when I click on “Show All Entries”–I clicked through all 45 pages of entries and mine is nowhere to be seen. I don’t think mine has even been read, let alone voted on. Darn, I really liked my entry. Is there anything that can be done or is there no point?
    Here’s my entry: http://figment.com/books/11007-Arson

  23. I’m confused. I did as the contest said and submitted my poem under the tag ‘flash5.” Yet, when I view the entries, mine is not there. Did I do something wrong?

  24. Suppose we are writing a poem, is it okay to break up the quote so it’s on multiple lines? Like it’ll still all be together, but a huge long sentence in a poem would look really funny I think :/
