Time Travel Contest

The Doctor: People don’t understand time. It’s not what you think it is.
Sally: Then what is it?
The Doctor: Complicated.
Sally: Tell me.
The Doctor: Very complicated.
Sally: I’m clever, and I’m listening, and don’t patronise me because people have died and I’m not happy. Tell me.
The Doctor: People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect… but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly… timey-wimey… stuff.

Dr. Who (the TV show), “Blink”

This week, write a story in which one or more characters travels through time. The genre, time periods, format (prose, poem, play), and the method and philosophy of time travel are completely up to you! Must be 800 words or fewer.

How to Enter:
1. Read the Contest Rules
2. Follow Time Travel Contest on Figment
3. Email your entry in the body of the email to timetravel@figment.com

Entries must be received by Monday, May 23 at midnight EST. Moderators and editors will choose the top semi-finalists, and then we’ll have a couple days of voting to determine the winner! The winner will win a gift certificate and Hermione’s Time Turning Necklace (From Wizarding World of Harry Potter – if you’re a guy & don’t want it, we’ll talk). Good luck, figlers!

Contest Rules

1. One entry per person, please.
2. The promotion of your contest entry is not allowed on Figment. This includes self-promotion and the promotion of other users’ contest entries in the Figment forums, the comments and reviews of stories, and the Figment Facebook page. Independent promotion on sites unrelated to Figment, like personal Facebook or Twitter accounts, is fine.
3. Works must be submitted to the above email address between the announcement of the contest and the closure of the contest. Entries created before the start date or after the end date will not be included in the pages of contest entries and will be ineligible to win. This means a new story must be created for the contest; adapting an old story published before the start of the contest will make the entry ineligible to win.
4. The rules of the contest are both strict and open to interpretation by a moderator.
5. The creation of multiple accounts to heart or otherwise vote for your contest entry on Figment is prohibited, and may result in the disqualification of that entry, the deletion of your Figment account, and/or the blocking of your IP address permanently from the site, at the moderator’s discretion.

  1. AH! I love Dr. Who! It’s like my favorite least favorite show cause it’s creepy and horrible but awesome…
And, I have been waiting for you guys to do a time travel contest. HOnestly figment, it’s about time! ^.^

  2. Is it alright if we use Doctor Who, like…. from the perspective of his companion (a made up one) or another time-lord?

    • Unfortunately fan fiction is not allowed for contests because it infringes on copyright (which says you cannot profit from copyright protected characters). But if you want to write a Dr.Who story that isn’t for a contest, that is fine.

  3. Dr. Who! 🙂

Too many good contests! I can’t decide which to enter (or maybe i’ll just enter them all)

  4. Okay so this is a question for mostly and contest ESPECIALLY this one. If I wrote a story then published it to find out it was too many words to qualify for the contest, then deleted some of it to make it smaller, would that still qualify? ‘Cause it says only one entry per person and it can’t be over the word limit but it would already be published. Please respond fast.

  5. Hahaha yeeesss a Doctor Who-inspired prompt! I’m definitely sticking a reference in my entry somewhere 🙂

  6. YES! I love sci-fi, time travel, and all that stuff, and I could use to write more short stories. I doubt I’ll make anything really good, but it’ll be fun to try. 🙂

  7. my brother and i share the same computer, so our ip addresses are the same… will this be a problem when we vote for each other?

    • Hi Robin

That rule applies to a disproportionate number of hearts coming from accounts on the same IP. Since it’s only the two of you, it’s not a problem. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

  8. That is a ridiculously short story you are having us write. I just wrote mine and I’m over 100 words longer than I should have been. Anyway the required length could be adjusted? That just seems to short 🙂

    • Hey Anna- unfortunately we need to be conservative with the length of the story because we are reading all of the entries to pick semi-finalists. Hopefully you can find a creative way of staying within the word limit? Eh? 😛 Good luck!

  9. Okay, I know the prompt is subjectable to interpretation by the writer, but can we have the characters ‘travel’ through time but have it not really happen, or does it have to be real time travel? Ex: A dream?

  10. omg i love doctor who, can’t believe that this quote was used but then dr who is awesome! i will defo enter this contest

  11. I don’t suppose we can set the story in the Doctor Who universe, so to speak? I mean, you’ve given us that lovely quote (which I was really excited to see)…
    Just curious. 🙂

  12. What if it’s a poem from a bard’s point of view together about to lovers that met, but had to leave each other? As in one was from the future.

  13. YES!!!!! I have a great idea for this and am super-dee-duper excited!!!!
BUT I was wondering about the whole time travel thing. Does the person literally have to travel through time, with a time machine and all, or can the person “travel” through time mentally and not physically…?

    • Hm, tough question. I’d say that it can’t really be a fantasy, as in they can’t just daydream about becoming a princess in 18th century England. They have to travel, as the prompt says – literally move from one time to another. Doesn’t have to be through a time machine though. Hope this clarifies!

  14. I wish I could enter but I have no great ideas and I doubt I’d be picked for it anyway.

Also, you misspelt Hermione. You wrote Hermoine, which made me giggle.
You know what? I might actually enter this in the end. This whole comment was rather pointless except for the
    Hermoine part.

  15. I cant even begin to tell you how frickin excited I am about a time travel contest, huge whovian here I love the Dr Who!

  16. Can you publish your entry on figment? If not, does it matter if it was only published for about 30 seconds before it was deleted? Thanx.

    • We ask that you not publish your stories for this contest on Figment, just to maintain blind judging. But if you did and then took it down — not a problem at all.

  17. I have a question. So, we just write a story, then email it to timetravel@figment.com, and that’s it? No questions asked? (well, except for the ones … oh, never mind, u get the point.) That’s it?

  18. I asked this earlier, but it didn’t go for some reason… Anyways, is there some type of bummer on the word count? Like, I use Word Perfect for writing so I don’t have a word counter, I either have to count by hand or use a website. If my website gives me say, 789 words, but then Microsoft Word (Which y’all run it through right?) gives something like 804 would I be disqualified? Would it be safer to just run it by Figment’s word counter or what?

  19. Is it all right if I send a different story instead of the one I originally sent? The one I sent before has 700 more words then allowed, and I couldn’t edit enough. Please reply soon!!!

    • Hi Benjamin

Yes, you can send a new one. In your new email, just make it clear that this is the correct entry. Also, please make sure to send it before the deadline, which is this Monday at midnight. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions or concerns.

  20. The entry I sent in was under 800 words but with the title and my name it was over the word count. Is that okay as long as the piece itself is within the word limit?

  21. OMG DOCTOR WHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MUST ENTER!!!!!! IMMEDIATLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. So is it okay if we just send in the story part of our entry? Just the actual words without the cover or anything else? If not can someone help me to figure out how to send the whole thing?

Thank you XD this is gonna be awesome!

  23. Thank you figment so much. Time travel is one of my favorite subjects. Probably my favorite star trek episodes about time travel.

  24. Dr. Who is one of the coolest shows in the world! Just saying. 🙂

Only 800 words? Ugh…but I really want to win a time-turner! That is beyond awesome! =D My inner nerd is screaming for joy, haha.

  25. So I have finished me story and I would like to enter it, but my email isn’t the best. Does it work to publish it? Or do I have to email it to you guys?

    • Hi Mariah

Since we’re running this contest with blind voting, we ask that Figmenters not publish their works on their profiles. This means you would definitely have to email it. Sorry!

  26. Okay it should have sent.
P.S. where is the figment base? Well what time zone? My computer time is an hour or so behind.

  27. Hi! I sent my time travel entry yesterday at 7:45 but I still haven’t recieved a confirmation letter. Not to be annoying, but have you recieved mine yet?

  28. Huh, for some reason my comment isn’t showing up, but can you tell me if you got my time travel entry? I didn’t get a confirmation email…

  29. Ahh! I am freaking out! I sent there is only 7 min left until the deadline, and I haven’t gotten my confirmation email!! Please help!!

  30. I just noticed this contest like two hours ago, and sent in a entry just before midnight EST, but I don’t think you would have gotten it on time exactly because of the normal emailing delays. Is there wiggle room in the time restriction and will I get a email stating whether my entry was accepted or not?

  31. I don’t believe I used the email address I signed up with so…did you still get the entry? Please let me know! Thank you!

    • Hi Kiki

I specifically remember responding to your email. I’ll forward it to you again. Either way, your entry was marked down, so don’t worry 🙂

  32. I know we aren’t supposed to publish our stories for the sake of blind voting, but can we publish it after the contest is finished and the winner is decided?

  33. Ah…Blink. Moffat’s finest story in all creation. *freezes on the spot after noticing a Silent in the corner* Ahem, sorry, what was i talking about?
