Phlash Photo Contest

It’s Flash fiction time! Sure, pictures are said to be worth a 1,000 words- but we think you can do better than that. Choose them wisely, because this picture is worth 500 words- to you.

In 500 or fewer words, write a story or poem inspired by this photograph.

How to enter:

1) Read the Contest Rules
2) Create your photographically inspired piece
3) Email your entry in the body of an email to phlashphotocontest@figment.com
4) Follow Phlash Photo Contest on Figment.

All entries must be received by Friday, July 22nd, 2011 at midnight (Friday going into Saturday).Β Moderators and editors will be selecting the top semi-finalists, followed by a round of voting (by Fig Folk) to determine a winner.

The winner will receive a thirty dollar gift card to Amazon.com or ThinkGeek.com– your choice! So be bold, be concise and be quick!

1. One entry per person, please.
2. The promotion of your contest entry is not allowed on Figment. This includes self-promotion and the promotion of other users’ contest entries in the Figment forums, the comments and reviews of stories, and the Figment Facebook page. Independent promotion on sites unrelated to Figment, like personal Facebook or Twitter accounts, is fine.
3. Works must be submitted according to the instructions above between the announcement of the contest and the closure of the contest. This means a new piece must be created for the contest; adapting an old Figment piece published before the start of the contest will make the entry ineligible to win.
4. The rules of the contest are both strict and open to interpretation by a moderator.
5. The creation of multiple accounts to heart or otherwise vote for your contest entry on Figment is prohibited, and may result in the disqualification of that entry, the deletion of your Figment account, and/or the blocking of your IP address permanently from the site, at the moderator’s discretion.

    • Hi Mira

You can include your entry as a Word document, or can copy and paste it into the body of the email. Because this will be judged by blind voting, we ask that contestants not publish their entries to Figment until the contest is over.

    • Hi Jessica

Because it’s blind voting, we ask the contestants not post their entries to Figment until after the contest is over. Thanks!

  1. Can the entry be, sort of, a follow-up to another piece? LIke, different story/characters but in the same universe?

    • Hi Megan

You can sign with your Figment name if you like. As long as we can get in touch with you with the email you send your entry with, and as long as it’s the same email for your Figment account, it’s not a problem. Hope this helps!

  2. Sounds fun-are we allowed to do it over 500 words? I mean, of course not, but is, like, 501 okay? ((Sorry, I’m new.))

    • Hi Maria

Because this contest will be judged by blind voting, we ask that contestants only email their entries, not publish them to Figment. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

  3. Are we allowed to give actual names to the books that appear in the books. For example, could we say they were the Harry Potter books?

  4. Thanks. πŸ™‚
    One more question:
The picture reminded me of going delirious, and it gave me a great idea. Is it okay if the floating books are not in my story?
You said it’s just what it reminded me of.

((oops-should I have emailed you instead??))

    • Hi Random Cat

The picture is meant for inspiration, so you can write about what you like πŸ™‚ I hope this helps!

  5. I published it for a second just to see how many words I had written and destroyed. Hope that is ok. Email has been sent. I can’t wait to see what everyone else wrote!

    • Hi Anime Lover

Just send an email with your entry using the correct email address. Just explain in your email that it’s the same entry and not a duplicate or extra entry, and that the new email is the one that should be used. I’ll make a note of it next to your entry so that there isn’t any confusion. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

    • Hi Hannah

Nope, signatures don’t count as part of the word count, but any chapter titles, footnotes, side notes, epilogues, prologues, etc. do count. I hope this helps and feel free to contact me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

    • Hi Kat

As long as your entry is not the book you currently have on Figment, yes, you can do a part 2. I hope this helps and please feel free to contact me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

  6. This seems like a really interesting contest, but I do have one question: does the story have to revolve around these books, or can they just show up at some point?
Thanks, and I can’t wait to enter! πŸ™‚

    • Hi Becky

They can show up at any point if you’d like to include them. The picture is meant as inspiration, so feel free to take it in any direction you like.

  7. YES! I love this style of contest, and I’m really excited to enter! Especially because the prize is to Amazon or Thinkgeek… two of my favoritest shopping sites. πŸ˜‰

  8. Haha that picture immediately made me think of Professor Flitwick’s charms class πŸ™‚ That’s not what I wrote about though.

  9. Does the entry have to reflect what’s happening in the photo, or can we just write what comes to mind when we look at the picture?

    • Hi Taylour

You don’t have to specifically mention what happens in the photo and you can write about what comes to mind. The photo is meant as inspiration, so you can take it in any direction you like.

    • Hi Kate

It’s not a problem! You were just sent a confirmation email, so your entry has been accepted. If you like, you can send a new email with the title of your entry, and a note will be made for it.

I hope this helps and please email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

    • Hi Sam

Yes, if the winner of the contest is in the UK, a UK voucher will be sent from amazon.co.uk. I hope this helps, and please feel free to contact me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any questions. Best of luck!

  10. ok so i made two mistakes without realizing, the first was i think i used the wrong email address so i just sent it again using the right one, but after i did that i was reading through these comments and realized we are supposed to have a title, which mine does not have, what should i do?

    • Hi Carly

No worries! All you have to do is send a new email with your entry, the title you’d like it to have, and from the correct email address. In your email, just make a quick note that this is the correct email and the updated entry. I hope this helps, and please contact me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any questions. Best of luck!

  11. Could I have someone edit it with an early access code for my draft on here, then delete it from Figment? Or would that violate the whole blind voting thing? Just curious.

  12. I sent in my enry, it had a title, and everything, and I even used spell and grammar check on word,
But going through it again today I noticed there were a few errors,
is it alright if I send the email in again, with the corrections?

    • Hi Mazz

Yes, you can send in an edited version until the deadline. Just make a note in your new email that it is the correct version that should be used as your entry. I hope this helps and please feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

  13. Does it have to be about floating books backed up by a sunny day in a very picturesque forest? can it be about the first thing that comes to my mind?

    • Hi Dreamkeeper

You don’t have to stick to the specific events in the picture; it’s meant as inspiration, so you can take it in any direction you like. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

  14. Okay so firstly can it be a story one’s writing with the inspiration of the picture, not published on figment but can be continued if one wants after the contest?

    • Hi Anynymous

Yes, it can be written from your inspiration, not necessarily the specific events in the picture. Also, you can continue the story and publish it on Figment after the contest is over. We ask that entries not be published to Figment during the contest, though. I hope this helps and please feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

    • Hi Anynymous

We ask that titles are given for the entries in order to avoid the confusion of numerous untitled entries. The title will not be counted in the 500 words.

    • Hi JoBeth

Yes, you can enter a poem, but it doesn’t absolutely have to be exactly 500 words. It can be less than the word limit, but not over. I hope this helps and please feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

  15. Two questions:

If we don’t make it into the semi’s, can we post it on Figment right away?

Also, how long should I wait for a confirmation email before I start freaking out?

    • Hi Fish

      1. I would wait until all the semi-finalists polls have gone up. If it’s not there, then you can post it.

      2. I’m sending them out now, so don’t freak out! Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any questions. Best of luck!

  16. Hi, I’m getting ready to send my email but I just realized the instructions/rules don’t tell me what to put in the subject line. Should I put Phlash Photo Contest, or the title of my story or what? Thanks for the help.

    • Hi Marie

You can just put “Phlash Photo” or “entry for contest.” We’ll know what it is, and if we have any questions, we’ll send you an email πŸ™‚

  17. I sent in my entry two days ago (or really early yesterday) and I have yet to get a confirmation e-mail. Is that bad?

  18. I sent my story thinking that I had corrected everything but when I read it again I noticed I had messed up on something! What do I do? Could I send it over again without it being a problem?

  19. Hi, I’m posting another comment, you must be bored of me by now.
I sent in my entry last night and I haven’t gotten a confirmation email, did I send it to the wrong address? Because I used copy paste…

    • Hi Aea

I’m working on the confirmation emails now – they may take a bit to go through, as my computer is acting up.

  20. Earlier in the comments you said we could use access codes of drafts to let people edit.
Does this mean we could have close figgie friends edit for us, or only outsiders?

    • Hi Halle

As long as it’s a draft and you are in no way publicly attached to a particular entry, then Figgies can edit for you. I hope this helps, and please email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any questions.

  21. Are we allowed to write a song-fiction? As in, write song lyrics in between the paragraphs to help set the mood (contributing to the word count, of course).

  22. Hi, I sent in my entry, and signed it “Xenia Sandoval”, but my real name shows up in the heading. I just want to make sure that doesn’t get in the way of anything. πŸ™‚

    • Hi Xenia

Since contestant names won’t be public during voting, and as long as we can get in touch with you with the email you sent your entry, it’s not a problem at all! Best of luck!

  23. Don’t mean to bother you but I haven’t received my confirmation e-mail yet. When should I expect to get one?

  24. Hi there,

For the contest, when emailing our entry, should we send it with or without a subject to the email. And also, should we include our names or will our email address for this website be information enough?

Sorry if this is kind of confusing:)

    • Hi Jasper

Just enter “phlash photo entry” as the subject, and you can include your entry in the body of the email. If you include an attachment, please make sure that it is either .pdf, .doc, or.rtf, as we are unable to open anything else. And as long as you use the email address associated with your Figment account, you do not need to include your Figment username. I hope this helps and please feel free to contact me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any questions.

  25. Ok, now I’m getting super worried. The entries are due today and I still need a confirmation e-mail. I sent it in two days ago and still got nothing. Do I need to e-mail it again or are you still working on the e-mails. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound like a pain. I just want to make sure my entry makes it in. o.o

  26. Hello, I accidentally missed a mistake when reading my entry after I already sent the email. Am I allowed to send another with the corrected entry? Thanks again for your time.

  27. Oops I sent mine in but I didn’t title it because it would counted in the word count. What should I do?

    • Hi Tatiana

The first batch of semi-finalists will be announced either over the weekend or on Monday. We’ll need a bit of time go through all the entries, so bear with us!

  28. i just lost power for the last four hours while i was in the middle of edits. i don’t suppose its midnight pacific time is it, seeing as i missed eastern…

  29. What time zone? I am late at entering but I am giving it a shot! So it’s 10:15, pacific time, where I live. But it’s 1:15 eastern time. Do I have time?

  30. i know that you might not be checking these posts because everyone already sent their entry in but i have just one more question.

when or how will we be notifyd if we won and can we put up our entry on figment now?

    • Hi dreamkeeper

Contestants would have to check the semi-finalists polls to see if their entries are included. If you see that your entry is not included by the last semi-finalist poll, you can post your entry to Figment. I hope this helps, and feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

    • Hi Sophie

The last batch of confirmation emails went out a little while ago, so if you don’t see it in your inbox, please also check your spam folder. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

  31. I was very sad when I found out about this two days late!
The picture was beautiful, and it inspired me in so many ways!
I can’t wait for more Phlash Photo Contests in the future!

    • Hi Annie

The last round of confirmation emails just went out (we’re a little slow on the weekends) so please check your emails. If you don’t see it in your inbox, please also check spam. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

    • Hi Kauri

The first round of semi-finalists will be posted tomorrow afternoon, so check the contests page around then. After the round of semi-finalist voting are completed, there will be one final round to determine the winner. Semi-finalists/finalists are not notified, so take a peek at the polls to see if your entry is there. I hope this helps and please contact me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

  32. Out of sheer curiosity, did anyone receive my email? I had to send it twice, and the second time was a couple hours after the deadline, but I didn’t receive an email back. Just checking to make sure.

  33. This is my first time doing a contest so im a little confused. What do you mean by the semifinalist” polls”?

    • Hi Claire

All the entries submitted for this contest are reviewed by Figment moderators and staff. After reviewing, a group of entries are chosen to be semi-finalists, which are then posted anonymously on a Figment account created specifically for this contest. A poll is set up with the names of the entries for that day and users can read the entries on the contest account (which is linked in the blog post for the poll) and then vote on the poll. There are usually four rounds of semi-finalist voting. When those polls are complete, there will be a finalists poll. This poll is for the entries that won their rounds of semi-finalist voting. Basically, Figmenters choose the winner of the contest through blind voting. I hope this helps and please let feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

    • Hi Morgan

The winner of the contest won’t be decided until the finalists poll at the end of the week. The first round of semi-finalist voting will be posted tonight, so check the contests page around then.

    • Hi Kit

Yes, there will be more. Another round of 5 entries will be posted tomorrow night, Wednesday night and Thursday night.

  34. when I sent my entry, I didn’t title my poem, does this mean that if my poem does get in the semi-finalists then they won’t post it up because of the lack of a title
