Recommended Book of the Week

Hello, Figaronis! Back again for another of our endlessly awesome recommendations? I know, I know, we’re great, but you know what else is great? Blood Red Road, by debut novelist Moira Young. This novel was rewarding and intense, all thanks to the main character, Saba, a gritty heroine journeying through all sorts of badlands to rescue her twin brother Lugh from the four horsemen who kidnapped him and murdered their father.

Let’s see where Blood Red Road falls on the Figment Scale of Awesome:

+ 92 for awesome facial tattoos. Saba and her brother Lugh share half-moon tattoos given to them by Pa to celebrate their midwinter births. Unfortunately, those tats make them easily recognized. On the plus side? They’re much more attractive than Mike Tyson’s face tattoo.

– 50 for Saba’s extreme codependency! You shouldn’t ever volunteer to get kidnapped just so you don’t have to be separated from your brother. This was one of the few times I thought Saba needed a crash course in How To Be A Better Heroine.

+ 75 for cage fighting! It was entertaining to imagine Saba duking it out with other combatants  . I felt like I was sweating and bleeding and taking kicks and throwing punches with her.

+ 500 for managing to be tougher than Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games). Yup, I said it, and I stand by it. If you don’t like it, take it up with my girl Saba—or should I say, the Angel of Death, as she’s later nicknamed.

– 25 for holding a grudge against her little sister Emmi for their mother’s death. Em couldn’t help it that she was born a couple months earlier than expected, but give her a break! She is your younger sister and doesn’t deserve to be spoken down to like an animal.

+68 for the hellwurms. Imagine racing across an empty field,  trying to get to the other side before sundown – which is when the gigantic, human-feeding worms that are hiding inside the earth will emerge. I won’t say much, but I’ll say this: Saba and her crew don’t make it in time. (Insert epic scene here.)

+200 for underplaying the romance. My little Figs, you’ll love the heartstone, a jewel that heats up when you’re near your heart’s desire.

That brings Blood Red Road to a total of 860 points! Seriously, if you miss Katniss and her flying arrows or loved the Maze Runner trilogy, the tale of Saba and her cage-fighting, duels with hellwurms, reluctant romance, and overall awesomeness this is the next book to add to your shelf.
