The Zombie Contest

Welcome to Figville!

Human Population: 2.

Zombie Population: 942,873,757,002,345,781.

The last two humans left in Figville are you and another person. Is it a sibling? A stranger who pulls you into safety? Orย just a buddy-o pal you’re now hunkering down with in a tavern? It’s your choice. Whoever your companion may be, you two had a shared problem: this zombie-flooded city. Thankfully, there’s a sanctuary a couple of states away. You were well on your way to reaching this safe haven … until a zombie infected your ally.

Decide the outcome in 1,000 words. Do you say goodbye and escape before your friend turns into a mindless murderer? Or do you put your partner to rest before they can raise the already ridiculous zombie population count?

  1. Read the full rules here.
  2. Email your entry in the body of an email to zombiecontest@figment.com.
  3. Follow Zombie Contest on Figment.

The entry deadline is September 30, 2011 at midnight (that’s Friday going into Saturday). The semi-finalists will be chosen by Figment staff and mods, and those semi-finalists will be posted for you to vote in polls. There will be one final poll to decide the winner.

Prizes: There will be (3) winners. The first place survivor will receiveย EZ Makeup Kit Dead-Like-Me Zombie Accessory, the second place survivor will receive a copy of The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From The Living Dead and the third (random) survivor will receive a DVD version of the filmย I Am Legend.

Do you have what it takes to survive the zombie apocalypse, figvivors?

    • Hey Tom

Doesn’t have to be based in an alley – it can take place anywhere you like, as long as it’s you, one other person, and a horde of zombies. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

  1. I haven’t actively been on Figment in a while and just read the contest rules… I’m lovin’ the contest (totally goes with the whole zombie, fantasy-esque fad going on nowadays) but I LIVE IN CANADA. Which means, according to the rule “open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States,” that I can’t participate, be a finalist, or win any of the prizes! I doubt I’m the only one on this site living in another country, too, so maybe you should reconsider those rules? :

    • Hi A.!

I’m not sure where everyone is seeing “alley” (we said “ally”), but you can start your entry anywhere after the zombie population has exploded. You can start with the friend/ally being infected, or start earlier than that – up to you! Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

    • Hey Alex,

Please pardon my previous response. I made a booboo.

The prompt asks that it be you and another human, so please make sure that ally is a human. Thanks!

  2. Awwww, I’m already writing a zombie story…but it’s NOTHING along these lines. At least, not yet. Oh well *sighs*, there’s always next time…

  3. Just a basic question that may help some of the others asking about the ally. The human ally is rather explanatory. Could a third ally be involved, such as an animal? Say, your loyal pet from before the infection arose? Like I said, just simple and hopefully to help other writers.

  4. What are our zombie guide lines? Namely how long does it take to take effect, what kind of zombie, how do they come infected-ecetra. Or is it all up to us?

  5. Me and my friends find the residents of the US only rule really unfair. Just because we live in the UK doesn’t mean we don’t want to enter!

  6. You people are amazing! ZOMBIES ZOMBIES ZOMBIES! I am so excited! Is there a city constraint? Do we have to set it in a metropolis, or a small town,or what?

    • I think it would be cool if Figment held some contests for the international users. I get the legal aspect of it. Perhaps some prizes like a feature of the story of their choice on the home page, a mention of their story in a Figment tweet, or inclusion in the newsletter? I know it’s not the same as a real prize, but they’re prizes that people would still want.

      • Hey Alexes-
A few weeks ago, we hosted a flash fiction prompt in our newsletter and our favorite response got posted in the following newsletter in full. We definitely hope to offer similar opportunities in the future, so keep your eyes peeled!
        Best,
        Emily

    • Hi Danielle,

You would not be able to use content published on Figment before the start of the contest, but can use older ideas. If the book you’re referring to was specifically published for this contest, you would have to remove the book from your profile when you email the entry to us, as to preserve the blind voting. Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

  7. So, we write a story, no more than 1000 words about two people in a zombie apocalypse and send it to that email. Correct? Oh, and do we put our name in the email or, what information do you need in it? Thanks for the help!

    • Hi Amy,

Yup, that’s how you submit. You don’t need to include a name or any other personal information, but please use either the email associated with your Figment account, or an email address that you check regularly in case we need to get in touch with you. You can reach me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.

  8. So, this sanctuary…

Can it have people in it? Or possibly have people in it? Or do our two characters have to be THE last two people in the world, no hope of finding anyone in there?

  9. How come the good competitions are never open for residents of AUSTRALIA? Or anywhere outside of the US for that matter? I find that extremely unfair as I’d love to participate in this competition.

  10. After the winners are announced for this contest, THEN can we post our stories on Figment? Because I would like the other Figs to read mine. I’m quite proud of it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Hey, just wanted to say two things:
    1. I AM OBSESSED WITH ZOMBIES. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
    2. I’m also a little impatient… I was just wondering how long it would take for the confirmation email to be sent out after sending in the entry? Sorry if I said this too soon, or if I seem TOO eager… I’m just REALLY excited. :3

  12. Who will be doing the blind voting? Will the stories be posted on figment anonymously? Or does some higher power determine the voting?

    • Hey Val-
Stories will be posted on Figment anonymously and then users will get the opportunity to read and vote for their favorites. Let me know if you have any other questions- esteele at figment.com
      Best,
      Emily

    • Hey B.R.-
Nope! The title isn’t included in the word limit. Let me know if you have any other questions- esteele at figment.com
      Best,
      Emily

  13. I’ve been trying to send my story to the website but it keeps bouncing back at me. Is there somewhere else I can send it? I have been copy and pasting the e-mail address so I know I’m not typing it incorrectly.

    Thanks

  14. I just wanted to ask once you guys put up the semi finalists we’ll just have to go to the contests page and the finalists and voting polls will be up there right?

    • Hey Melissa,

Yes, the semi-finalists will each go up in a different round, and all users can vote for their favorite. Once the semi-finals are over, we’ll have another poll for the finalists, and you all choose the winner! Feel free to email me at Maria@Figment.com if you have any other questions.
