Life isn’t easy for Tyrell, the main character in Coe Booth’s Bronxwood (which you can read an excerpt of for a limited time here). Even though he’s just 16, he has to act much older to handle the fact that his brother is in foster care, his father has just been released from prison, and his mother can barely take care of herself. But charismatic Tyrell still manages to play basketball, DJ parties, and go on dates, like a normal teenager–even as life at home begins to fall apart.
Inspired by Tyrell’s persistence and resourcefulness, we’re giving you the Bronxwood Contest. In no more than 1,200 words, write a piece that includes the following words: diner, boom box 2 a.m., bullet, alley. The genre, style, and plot points are all up to you.
