The Books of Bayern Contest

Spiderman had Peter Parker. Superman had Clark Kent. The Figment moderators pretend to be mild-mannered Internet types by day, but by night unleash their secret pow—. I mean, what secret?

In Shannon Hale’s Books of Bayern series (Goose Girl, Enna Burning, River Secrets, and Forest Born—each of which you can begin reading on Figment for a limited time), the central characters live in a world where ladies-in-waiting are cruel usurpers, people can control fire, and magic is mistrusted. In order to remain accepted members of society, people must keep their powers—whether the ability to speak to animals or the power of persuasion—a secret.

Inspired by Shannon Hale’s brave, magic-wielding heroines, we give you the Books of Bayern Contest. Your challenge: in no more than 1,000 words, write a story in which the main character has powers that he or she feels must stay hidden.

Entries must be submitted by Monday, October 31st. Then you vote on your favorite entries; voting ends on Monday, November 8th. The top five (5) most-hearted entries will be judged by Shannon Hale herself!

How to enter:
1. Read the full rules here.
2. Make a Figment.com account
3. Create a new story on Figment
4. On the “Details” tab in the “Tags” box, put: BayernContest
5. In about two hours, your contest entry will appear with the rest by clicking the link below

The first place winner will receive a copy of Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl and Enna Burning and a $15 Amazon gift card; the second place winner will receive a copy of Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl and a Figment tote; and the third place winner will receive a copy of Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl.  Good luck, Figs!
