Girls with Grit: Jennifer Cowan

Girls with grit are fierce, independent, strong young women. They’re girls who face tough situations and sometimes don’t come out on top. They’re girls who work hard, who believe in themselves, and who try to follow their principles.

Groundwood Books’ Girls With Grit series is on Figment because each of these books is about a girl like you, or your sister, or your best friend. We’ll be featuring different books every week, so be sure to check the Figment Features page often!

Our first Girls With Grit book is earthgirl, by Jennifer Cowan (which you can start reading for a limited time here on Figment), which is about a teenage girl who–with the help of some McDonald’s leftovers, a video camera, and a killer throwing arm–finds herself the center of a fast-growing movement of eco-warriors who are fighting back.

Jennifer Cowan will be joining us on Twitter this Thursday, November 3rd at 8:00 p.m. EST for a #figlitchat about writing good stories that have messages and not letting the plot become overwhelmed by the larger, political issue. Join @FigmentFiction and @earth_girl for tips about how to integrate loaded issues into your piece without allowing the story to get overwhelmed.
