Girls With Grit Week Four!

In honor of the Girls With Grit series (a collection of stories featuring kick-ass females that we’ll be featuring through early December) we want to know which chick is the grittiest.

It’s been a long, brutal battle. But we’re down to two girls. They’re almost equally matched, and choosing one over the other seems like making a choice between peanut butter and peanut butter with magical powers.

Before we begin! A moment of reflection for gritty girls gone by:
Week One Showdown
Week Two Showdown
Week Three Showdown

Which of our two final girls will take home the ultimate prize? Let’s run down the relevant categories:

Caliber of Defeated Girls: Buffy
In our showdown,  Buffy faced off against Faith (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Olive Penderghast (Easy A), and Hanna (Hanna).  Hermione went up against Jo March (Little Women), Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), and Mulan (Mulan). For the killer one-two punch of Faith and Hanna, Buffy takes it here, despite Hermione’s Everdeen defeat.

Body Count: Hermione
You’d think Buffy would own this category. She’s the queen of taking down the Big Bad, right? One problem. All of her would-be bodies disintegrate into DUST. There are no bodies to count! Hermione almost wins by default.

Special Skills: Hermione
It’s Buffy’s super-strength and awesome agility versus Hermione’s magical powers. And although Buffy’s buffness is intimidating, the long-distance range of Hermione’s magic and her variety pack of spells make this one a Hermione lock-down.

Posse:  Buffy
Even though Hermione has The Boy Who Lived and The Ginger Who Ate A Lot, Buffy has, at one time or another, a witch,  a demon, an ex-demon, a magical key, a Watcher, two vampires, and Xander hanging around. WIN.

Grittiness: ???
Too close to call. So, we turn to you. Which girl has more grit–Buffy or Hermione?

Girls with grit are fierce, independent, strong young women. They’re girls who face tough situations and sometimes don’t come out on top. They’re girls who work hard, who believe in themselves, and who try to follow their principles.

Groundwood Books’ Girls With Grit series is on Figment because each of these books is about a girl like you, or your sister, or your best friend. We’ll be featuring different books every week, so be sure to check the Figment Features page often!

Meanwhile, we’ve got weekly challenges in the Got Grit? Forum (with five chances to win prizes!) plus an awesome writing contest. What are you waiting for?

  1. dear god, buffy should be kicking hermione’s BUTT! i’m a big harry potter fan, but seriously, buffy’s DIED TWICE to save the world!

  2. Seriously? Is this even a contest? Hermione wins…obviously! How could anyone argue? Sure, Buffy grand and all, but she’s killing things that are already, well, dead. Hermione’s battling an evil wizard that has 7 lives for goodness sakes! So not fair, it’s like trying to kill a cat using a dead mouse as your weapon! And guess what? HERMIONE (and The Boy Lived and The Ginger Who Ate A Lot) WIN! Uh-huh! Oh Yeah! Snap Dragon!

  3. Hermione all the way! Buffy is gritty, sure, but ZAP, and she’s gone! Besides, her acting is … not so superb. I don’t know, I’m not here to judge that … but seriously!

  4. This vote is kind of biased considering the age group voting ( too young for Buffy’s original airing) and the website content (books)but I think it’s Buffy Summers. She’s the most badass chick in the cosmos. She died twice, she killed her boyfriend for the good of the world, she BLEW UP HER HIGH SCHOOL, she thwarted an evil government scheme to harness magic, she told the watchers council who was boss (ie her)and defeated a goddess, sacrificing herself in the process (instead of her little sister). She also dug herself out of her own grave and defeated the first evil who put all the big bad monsters on this earth. Buffy saved the world a lot. She completely redefined the role of slayer by making ‘every girl who could be a slayer, be a slayer’. She looked past being ‘the only girl in the world with the strength…’ and shared her gift and her power to protect the world.

(i also disagree on the ‘body count’ option, Buffy’s killed more than vampires eg- demons, gods and Mal from Firefly dressed like a Vicar.)

    • Finally! That’s exactly what I’m thinking!! Everyone’s saying that Hermionie should win, but if she didn’t have her wand, she wouldn’t have a chance! And i’m not baised, I LOVE Harry Potter, but Buffy by far is the grittiest.

  5. I mean like, she’s got the brains, PLUS she helped defeat a super-powerful evil wizard with seven lives. She was the one who found out about the basilik and figured out the mystery of the Stone… !!!!!!

    • And…she had the idea of the DA, figured out the deathly hallows, in the short, Ron and Harry wouldn’t last 2 days without her!!
