Pure Contest Winners

In Julianna Baggott‘s Pure, everything has gone to hell in a handbasket. Pressia lives in a world so dystopic that it makes all other dystopias look like Edens. For the Pure Contest, we asked you to write a story in 1,200 words or fewer about a survivor like Pressia.

The ten most-hearted entries were sent to the Grand Central Publishing paperback division Editor-in-Chief, Beth deGuzman, to be judged. That’s right–they were judged by a real-live professional editor! Beth selected the winners and had some comments about her favorite entries!

First Place: IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED by Miranda Rosalie
Beth says: Utterly believable and horrifying. Good use of nonlinear narrative.

Congrats on the win, Miranda! You’ll be receiving a copy of Pure, a Figment t-shirt, and a $15 Amazon gift card!

Second Place: WHAT’S FOR DINNER by Sheri
Beth says: Unique and imaginative.

Nice job, Sheri! You’ve won your very own copy of Pure and a Figment tote!

Third Place: MEMORIES OF THE LONG FORGOTTEN by Amara
Beth says: The starkness of the writing is effective and intriguing. I wanted to know more about the Outside and the Interior and children being used as spies, etc.

Amara, you win a copy of Pure!

Beth also had comments on a couple of other stories:

A VICTIM OF SNOWFLAKES by Jaso Bolay

Beth says: Chapter 2 comes across with frightening authenticity.

THE END by G. Gómez

Beth says: The memory of the apple is vivid. I could taste that apple.

Congratulations again to the winners, and thanks to all who participated!
