Stars! They Read Like Us: Michaela Watkins

We loved Michaela Watkins during her stint on SNL (her Hoda Kotb and Arianna Huffington impressions were a-mazing). We dug her turn as J.Lo’s BFF in The Back-Up Planand we giggle along each time she guest stars as Schmidt’s boss on New Girl. And now, we’re excited that she’s shared some of her top book recommendations with us!

Read on for Michaela’s take on pretending to read books to impress your crush and her undying devotion to Mr. Darcy. And don’t forget that she’ll be one of the stars reading stories written by Figment users (!) at the L.A. Times Festival of Books on April 21. We can hardly wait!

Have you ever lied about having read a book to impress someone? (If yes, what was the book and why?)
Absolutely. I think it was anything by Dostoevsky. I had a crush on a guy who was really “deep”. Thought that would impress him. It didn’t.

What’s the one book that you’ve sworn to read before you die?
The Iliad, by Homer . . . one day.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who?
Mr. Darcy Mr. Darcy Mr. Darcy. I love him. I want to get in a time machine to a fictional place and play piano for him while he broods across a parlor somewhere in an English country mansion. Is that wrong?

If you could play any character from a book, who would you choose?
I would’ve really relished a shot as the lead in Eat, Pray, Love … any chance they’ll do a remake?

Do you have a book on you right now? What is it?
I have a few on me: It Chooses You by Miranda July, Kissing Outside the Lines by Dianne Farr, and The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.

What’s the one book that would be a deal-breaker if you saw it on a date’s bookshelf?
Hitler Is My Hero. I don’t know if that book exists, but if it did, I’m pretty sure it’d be a deal breaker. I suppose anything by Rush Limbaugh. However, Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations by Al Franken is a great book.

What’s a book that’s made you:
blush: Portnoy’s Complaint by Philip Roth
shiver: Recently, Waiting by Ha Jin but also countless soliloquies by Shakespeare.
cry: Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger
laugh out loud: Barrel Fever by David Sedaris
