Daily Theme from Alyxandra Harvey!

It’s National Poetry Month, so a poetry prompt was clearly in order for today’s guest author Daily Theme. We know and love the awesome Alyxandra Harvey for her deliciously dark, funny vampire series, The Drake Chroniclesand for her latest novel, Stolen Away, which VOYA called “beautifully descriptive, evoking hot summer nights and heart-stopping battles.” But it turns out this multifaceted writer is also an accomplished poet! (And we didn’t know it!–sorry, sorry.) Stay tuned for Briar Rose, her collection of poems, which is set to drop in the U.S. later this spring, and try your hand at her poetry prompt below…

  1. Blood-red charged emotions sling from within

A tortured soul lost among the crowd.

To see the soul within her surroundings

Imagine a hallway long and cluttered,

    Cluttered with others wearing masks

To hide the hunger deep within.

For who hungers not to be accepted

By those we admire and work to impress?

Seeking solace within a world seemingly

    Built on chaotic premises, purposely

    Causing the lost to falter.

The lost soul works to find an outlet

    For the emotions roiling inside.

But, instead of harnessing their power,

She finds them leaking out ceaselessly

Spilling over onto those masked figures

    Surrounding and encapsulating her.

They seem not to notice the fire now

    Corrupting their souls, lost themselves

Among the corridor of the world.

    The tangerine sweetness of imitating

Those who fit in by wearing their masks

Now loses its hold over the lost soul.

    Her fire becomes their fire.

    Their masks are soon lost.

    They join her charged emotions

To show they stand together as one

In a hallway no longer meant for one.

  2. Quiet Solace

    She took her quiet solace.

In front of the crackling fire.

Willed away the remains of stress

as she looked out the window at the bay.

    Appeasing her raging hunger,

    she bit into a tangerine.

The blood flowed from its pulp.
