Julie Kagawa Just Wants to Play “The Sims,” Okay?

We really love Julie Kagawa‘s Iron Fey series, so we were thrilled to hear about her newest book, The Immortal Rules. The first entry in the Blood of Eden series, you can begin reading it on Figment.

The Immortal Rules is set in a world where vampires make up the majority of the population–and they aren’t the cuddly kind of vamp, either. They’re vicious, blood-sucking monsters . . . and our heroine, Allie, has just become one of them. This crazy-awesome plot sparked some questions for us–most importantly, what are Julia Kagawa’s favorite video games?!

Your main character, Allie, is a smart, tough, avid reader who wants to share her knowledge with others. Are you and Allie similar?

Allison and I have a lot in common, definitely. We both value books, we both have (and can wield) weapons, and we’re both fighters (I love my kali and kung fu classes). I’m much more similar to Allie then I was to Meghan of the Iron Fey series. But I think a tiny piece of myself goes into all my characters, and I believe that’s true for all writers.

Stick, a timid member of Allie’s ragtag gang of struggling survivors, seems like a little brother to Allie; she’s willing to share what little she has with him. How do you make such a strong bond feel authentic and believable?

I think drawing on familial ties is important. I’m the eldest of three sisters, and I know that if something happened to them, I’d want to be there to help. Since Allie lost her mother at a young age, she sees her gang as her family and tends to be very protective of them.

In addition to the upcoming The Immortal Rules, you’re also the author of the bestselling Iron Fey series. Was it difficult putting characters that you know so well on the back burner for a bit?

Truthfully, though I was a little sad to say goodbye to the Iron Fey characters, I was also excited to start something new, and very, very different. Meghan, Ash, Puck, Grim, everyone—their stories had been told, and I was pleased with where the series ended, how everyone turned out. And it’s not goodbye forever. In the fall of 2012, the second Iron Fey series will be released, starring a teenage Ethan Chase, Meghan’s brother.

We’ve noticed that you’re a huge gamer! What’s your favorite game? Does gaming influence your writing in any way?

Oh, definitely. Gaming and anime are my two biggest sources of inspiration. I love epic stories, characters, and lush, crazy, immersive environments. I feel a video game is just another way of telling a story using a different platform, and I tend to be drawn to games that have epic stories and unforgettable characters. A few of my favorites are Dragon Age, Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls, Assassins Creed, Infamous, Soul Caliber, all the Zelda incarnations, Gears of War, Borderlands, the Final Fantasy series (especially 7, 8 and 10), and of course I can’t live without my Sims.

You’ve created playlists for the Iron Fey series. Are there songs that you associate with The Immortal Rules as well?

I’ve recently discovered Skillet, and two of their songs are perfect for The Immortal Rules. “Monster” describes Allie’s struggle perfectly, and I also love “Awake and Alive.”

If you had to choose between the world you created for the Iron Fey series and the world of The Immortal Rules, where would you rather live?

No contest: the Iron Fey world by far. I can deal with phoukas and kelpies and trolls and goblins far better than rabids. And it would be exceedingly difficult to live in a post-apocalyptic world. How would I play my Sims?

  1. What about FFIX? That is my favourite Final Fantasy game, but X is a close second.

It’s good to know that gamers and anime otakus are able to become authors. I can totally relate to what she said about being drawn to games with epic stories.
Like Final Fantasy IX… (Yeah, the others are cool too, but I have to plug my favourite)

  2. I love how I knew (or was at least familiar with) every single game she listed…She’s got good taste 😛
