In the new novel From What I Remember, by Valerie Thomas and Stacy Kramer, four high school seniors, days away from graduation, end up in Mexico on the adventure of a lifetime. Kylie, Max, Lily, and Will are an unexpected quartet: the loner, the popular guy, his girlfriend (or is that ex-girlfriend?), and the gay BFF. But like the best gangs, it’s their differences that unite them and make them an interesting team.
Inspired by the FWIR gang, we’ve collected a few of our all-time favorite foursomes—a good reminder that while two’s company and three’s a crowd, the best things in life come in fours.
The Beatles: John. Paul. George. Ringo. These guys weren’t called the Fab Four for nothing. From the their early days wearing motorcycle jackets and singing cover songs in Hamburg to their turn as the biggest band in the world, the Beatles wouldn’t have been the anything without the sum of their individual talents. See also: the Clash, the Ramones, and the Wonders.
Little Women: Who doesn’t want to be a member of the March family? Imagine cozy Saturday evenings spent in the garret, hosting meetings of the Pickwick Club. Heaven! (We understand why Laurie longed to be a part of it.) Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy make up one of our all-time favorite foursomes, and whenever we feel a little sad, there’s nothing like tucking into Little Women and spending some quality time with Alcott’s sweet and spunky sisters.
Pretty Little Liars: It’s the secrets (and the text messages from beyond the grave) that unite these four girls from Rosewood, PA. And we just love all that intrigue. And the Twin Peaks references. And ZOMG the clothes! Aria, Emily, Spencer, and Hanna might have a lot on their plates, between trying to solve a murder and go to high school, but they sure look good doing it. There hasn’t been a more fashionable foursome on television since Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha ruled the streets of NYC.
The Wizard of Oz: The Lion, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and Dorothy: The Courage, the Brains, the Heart, and the . . . Home? Human. She’s the only human, right? The other three are dreams. Or metaphors? Dreamaphors.
The Founders of Hogwarts: They go together like snakes and badgers and birds and griffins! The four founders of Hogwarts—Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin, and Godric Gryffindor—created the school that housed all of Harry’s adventures. And as much as we’d like to give some of the founders a stern you-need-to-get-less-maniacal talking-to, Slytherin, we know that it takes all sorts to fill a Sorting Hat.
