Imagine meeting someone and immediately knowing when and how that person will die. Now imagine that everyone-knows-that-you-know when and how they will die. You’d be famous and feared. That’s what life is like for Adam and Sarah, the main characters in Rachel Ward’s Infinity, the final book in the Numbers trilogy. And the cherry on top of their prognosticating sundae? Their little baby daughter, Mia, has the power to switch her death-date with other people’s—which means she could live forever.
In honor of all of the numbers of Numbers, The Chaos, and Infinity, we’re hosting a flash-fiction week that’s all about dates: past, present and future. Yesterday, we asked you to imagine a tale set on December 25, 4023. Today, we look to the past. Your challenge: Write a story of 100 words or fewer, set on this date:
Today’s Date: July 10, 6000 B.C.E.
You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on June 15, 2012 to enter. The Figment team will choose the 10 best entries from the entire week and send them to Rachel, who will choose one grand-prize winner to receive copies of Numbers, The Chaos, and Infinity, and a $25 Amazon gift card. For every daily prompt, the Figment team will also choose one winning entry. Each of those five writers will receive copies of Numbers, Chaos, and Infinity.
