Every month, Girls Write Now hosts a fabulous event. Their talented mentees–high school girls who are paired with professional mentors to hone their creative writing skills–have the opportunity to read their work aloud for friends and family. Before last month’s event, I had a chance to sit down with mentee Emily Sarita before she read aloud from her piece “Los Regalos de Angelitos” about a family trip to the Domican Republic. It’s a poignant piece about the bonds of family and tradition that I highly recommend. Emily’s reading is below, and you can watch all the mentees read here.
Prior to the reading, Emily and I chatted about her experience with Girls Write Now, her work, and her family. You can see our interview here.
It was a fantastic event, especially since we also got to hear from guest author Raina Kelley, senior editor at ESPN The Magazine. If you’re local, drop by the next Girls Write Now CHAPTERS reading this Friday, June 15 at 6p.m. ET at John Street Church here in Manhattan. You’ll love it!
