C.J. Omololu’s novel Transcendence is about Cole Ryan, a teenaged girl who discovers she has the ability to see her past lives. There is a little romance thrown in there and some mystery and the story draws you in from the first page. The book got us excited to read other novels about reincarnation and so we asked C.J. to share her top five list. And she threw in a bonus book thrown in for good measure.
It always amazes me that you can give ten writers a single subject and come up with ten very different stories (vampires anyone?). When I got the idea for Transcendence, I did a lot of research on different reincarnation theories. I took what I liked and invented the rest, which eventually became the world of the Ahket. While I was writing, I made a point of not reading any other books about reincarnation because I didn’t want to unintentionally incorporate anyone else’s ideas, but now that the book is out in the world I’ve read many other great stories on the subject. If you enjoyed the reincarnation theme in my book, here just a few of the others you should check out (in the order I wrote them down in my notebook, not in order of preference):
1. Reincarnation by Suzanne Weyn
While the subject is obvious from the title, it’s also a story of love through the ages from prehistory to the present, with a green jewel providing the key.
2. Incarnate by Jodi Meadows
There’s a fun twist in this high fantasy: It’s the people who remember their past lives who are normal, and the nosouls, who don’t, are the possible danger.
This story veers into the realm of mystery. The main character, Will, discovers that he might be a Returner—someone who’s been reincarnated and remembers atrocities that happened in his past lives.
4.The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller
In this book and its sequel, All You Desire, we meet Haven and discover her connections to the people in her life who have been with her for centuries in one way or another. She learns about the Ouroboros Society, which has been set up to help Eternal Ones succeed in each lifetime.
5. My Name is Memory by Anne Brashares
In a departure from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Brashares writes an epic love story about Daniel and Lucy. It’s a romance that spans time, following the couple throughout the ages.
Bonus Book: Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan
Consider this the bonus book, as it technically isn’t about reincarnation, but about immortals and how they’ve lived each of their lifetimes. Nastasya has been living as a party girl and sends herself to immortal rehab when she realizes her life is off track There she meets a handsome boy she doesn’t remember, but suspects is connected to her past.
These are just a few of the many books with reincarnation themes, and each one is so different from the last. What are some of your favorites?
