As always, we were blown away by the talent and creativity demonstrated by the teen writers and their professional mentors at the most recent (and final for the year!) Girls Write Now CHAPTERS reading. The girls are always inspiring, and we can’t wait to see them pick back up in the fall. GWN ended the year in style. Of course, Figment was in attendence . . . and we were given the VIP treatment! We were able to interview mentor/mentee pair Sharline Dominguez and Nancy Mercado before they read a pair piece about a trip to a museum.
The piece is conversational, funny, and colloquial in style. It recounts a mentor/mentee field trip to see an exhibit called “Carsten Höller: Experience” at the New Museum in New York City. The exhibit was designed to challenge viewers’ expectations of the world–what better exercise for writers? You can see Sharline and Nancy read their piece, as well as my interview with the two of them below:
I learned so much from speaking with them–and I encourage all of you to take a trip outside the norm to spark something interesting in your own writing. Get those creative juices flowing!
