In Nora Zelevansky’s debut novel, Semi-Charmed Life, Beatrice Bernstein doesn’t feel like she fits in with her family. Her parents are influential members of the New York City art scene and her older sister is a literary genius. Beatrice, on the other hand, loves reality TV and junk food (both frowned upon in the Bernstein household).
Beatrice also dreams of traveling the world. Her parents, though, don’t see any reason to leave New York. Her dad argues that the espressos served in Manhattan cafes are just as good as any served in Paris. The Bernsteins are devoted to Manhattan.
