Entice Short Story Contest

Jessica Shirvington’s new novel, Entice, is a thrilling combination of angel mythology, forbidden romance, and intense action. Violet is a Grigori, part angel, part human, and at 17, she’s far from a typical teenager. Instead of focusing on school and her passion for painting, she’s tasked with protecting the human race from vengeful exiled angels. She has a team of Grigoris to help her in this epic battle, but everyone seems to be hiding something and she is unsure who to trust.

Figment is hosting a writing challenge inspired by Entice. Each chapter of the book opens with a quote that gives the reader some insight into what’s to come. Your challenge: Use the following quote as inspiration for a short story:

“The terrible thing about the quest for truth is that you find it.”

—Remy de Gourmont

The winner of the challenge will get a chance to meet Jessica Shirvington IN PERSON during one of her stops on the Entice book tour. Learn more about Jessica and read an excerpt from Entice and the prequel Embrace here.

In addition to entering a short story in the contest, we are asking you to include three questions you would like to ask Jessica if you won the chance to meet her. These questions should be included at the end of your story.

How to enter:

1. Read the full rules.
2. Create an account on Figment.com.
3. Start a new writing of 1,200 words or fewer.
4. Tag your writing with EnticeContest on the Details tab.
5. Press “Publish Now.”
6. You should receive a pop-up confirmation of your entry, and in about two hours or so, your piece should appear among the submissions.

You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on August 13 to enter your story. Voting will run until 5:00 p.m. ET on August 20, at which point the ten most-hearted entries will be sent to Jessica Shirvington and her editors at Sourcebooks, who will choose the winner!

The Grand Prize winner will get a chance to meet Jessica Shirvington (or talk with her by phone). The winner will also receive an Entice tote bag, and signed copies of Entice and Embrace.

The second place winner will receive an Entice tote bag and signed copies of Entice and Embrace.

The third place winner will receive signed copies of Entice and Embrace.

  1. Do the three questions at the end count into our story’s word limit? So, for example, if my questions took up 200 words, would my story be limited to 1000 words?

  2. Where do we put the questions? In the description or in the actual story after (or before) we write it?

  3. Out of curiosity, is it alright for you to heart your own entry, or would that be breaking the rules?

  4. Hello. My word count is exactly 1200 words but with the questions, the word counter says it is 1255 or so. I added the questions as a second chapter. Will this get me disqualified/ If so, How do I change this??

  5. It said voting ended 5:00 yesterday but no notice has been given? When will it come and also how long, tentatively, until results come?
