Beautiful Lies Flash-Fiction Contest

In Jessica Warman’s new novel, Beautiful Lies, nothing is quite as it seems. The story opens with two twin sisters standing on a wooded path, fixing their make-up before meeting friends at the fair. It all seems rather ordinary, but something sinister lurks in the background. And before the evening is over, one of the twins has mysteriously disappeared.

Inspired by Jessica Warman’s dark and brooding settings, we’ve got a weeklong flash-fiction contest for you! Each day we’ll be giving you a new setting—some place that seems totally normal. Your challenge: In 150 words or less, write a descriptive scene about the setting that feels creepy and menacing.

  1. Is it okay if I did the August 14 prompt, even though it’s already the 15th? They hadn’t posted the August 15th prompt this morning when I was writing my submission.
