Jessica Warman’s novel Beautiful Lies is full of unexpected surprises. Alice and Rachel are identical twins growing up in a typical suburban neighborhood with wide lawns and swimming pools in the backyard. But the twins are far from ordinary—they are connected by a deep psychic bond. And when one of them goes missing, it becomes clear that their neighborhood is far from idyllic.
Inspired by Jessica Warman’s dark and brooding settings, we’ve got a weeklong flash-fiction contest for you! Each day we’ll be giving you a new setting—some place that seems totally normal. Your challenge: In 150 words or less, write a descriptive scene about the setting that feels creepy and menacing.
Today’s setting: Backyard of a suburban home
