Jessica Warman’s new novel, Beautiful Lies is the story of identical twins, Alice and Rachel, who share a deep psychic connection. When one of them goes missing, the other begins to suffer horrible injuries, even though she hasn’t been touched. Fearing for her sister’s life, she begins to search their neighborhood and town. She seems to know every hidden passage and secret closet. In this idyllic setting, why are there so many locked doors?
Inspired by Jessica Warman’s dark and brooding settings, we’ve got a weeklong flash-fiction contest for you! Each day we’ll be giving you a new setting—some place that seems totally normal. Your challenge: In 150 words or less, write a descriptive scene about the setting that feels creepy and menacing.
Today’s setting: Fast food restaurant
You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on August 17, 2012 to enter. The Figment team will choose the 10 best entries from the entire week and send them to Jessica, who will choose one grand prize winner. The grand prize winner will receive copies of Beautiful Lies, Between, Breathless, and Where Truth Lies all by Jessica Warman; copies of Fracture and Hysteria (which won’t be released until February 2013) by Megan Miranda; and Breaking Beautiful by Jennifer Shaw Wolf.
