It’s that time of year again. You’ve got a backpack full of fresh school supplies. You’ve got the perfect first day outfit. You’ve memorized your new schedule and finished your summer reading (hopefully). The days are longer, the evenings, cooler. It’s time to go back to school.

To ease you back into the school routine, we’re hosting a weeklong school-themed flash-fiction contest!

Every day at midnight, we’ll give you a new flash-fiction prompt right here on this page. Check it out, and in 150 words or less write a short story about going back to school.

Prompts will be posted at 12:00 a.m. ET everyday from Monday, August 27 to Friday, August 31. You have 24 hours to enter a story in response to the prompt. You can enter one story for each day’s prompt. (If you respond to multiple prompts over the course of the challenge, those stories do not have to be related.)

The Figment editors will choose one winning response to each day’s prompt; that story’s writer will receive a super secret surprise book and their story will be featured on the Figment homepage!

Monday’s Prompt (8/27): Write a story that takes place on the front steps of a high school. Tag your story BacktoSchoolFlash and SchoolFlash1. You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, August 27 to enter.

Tuesday’s Prompt (8/28):  Write a story told from inside a locker. Tag your story BacktoSchoolFlash and SchoolFlash2. You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 28 to enter.

Wednesday’s prompt (8/29): Write a story set in a high-school cafeteria. Tag your story BacktoSchoolFlash and SchoolFlash3. You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, August 29 to enter.

Thursday’s prompt (8/30): Write a story set in a classroom. Tag your story BacktoSchoolFlash and SchoolFlash4. You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 30 to enter.

  1. Do you have to write for EVERY flash prompt? Or can you submit the prompts that you have inspirtation for?

    • Hey Cortnie-

As long as your entry was-
-published, not saved as a draft
-created between the announcement and end of the contest
      -tagged correctly

It is somewhere in the entries. You may not be able to find it since there are hundreds of entries, but it is there.

  2. My submission for the Backtoschoolflash5 contest still hasnt posted as an entry??? It shows on my writing page and I received the pop-up, that it was successfully published???
