Because It Is My Blood Flash-Fiction Contest!

Because it is My Bloodby Gabrielle Zevin, is the story of Anya Balanchine, the daughter of New York’s most notorious (and dead) crime boss. Anya has a lot of secrets. Whether she’s trying to protect her younger sister from mafia family drama or keep the world from knowing she’s still in love with the D.A.’s son Win, it’s hard to keep them all straight.

Inspired by Anya and her secrets, we’re hosting a weeklong flash-fiction contest! Each day we’ll be giving you a new secret. Your challenge: In 150 words or fewer, write a short scene about the secret.

Prompts will be posted at 12:00 a.m. ET everyday from Tuesday, September 25 to Saturday, September 29. You have 24 hours to enter a story in response to the prompt. You can enter one story for each day’s prompt. (If you respond to multiple prompts over the course of the challenge, those stories do not have to be related.)

The Figment editors will choose the 10 best entries from the entire week and send them to Gabrielle, who will choose one grand-prize winner. The grand-prize winner will receive an e-reader loaded with the first two books in The Birthright series (All These Things I’ve Done and Because It Is My Blood). Five daily winners will each receive a signed copy of Because It Is My Blood.

  1. Thanks for picking up the number of contests where finalists are selected by mods/staff.

I missed the old e-mail contests, so it’s nice to see that you brought back something similar.

  2. Does the secret have to be revealed to the MC or someone else?

Like, the character knows what’s all going on, but someone else finds out the secret?

  3. It’s nice to see more contests with actual judging from the get-go. Thanks for including more of these. One questions: five daily winners. Does this mean that tomorrow we’ll know who won this prompt?

    • Hey! Although there are five daily winners, they probably won’t be announced next-day (as it takes some time to read and verify all the entries).

  4. Hello,
I’m just a bit curious about something that I’ve seen on this and a previous contest. The word limit IS 150 or fewer, right? I am asking because, I saw some entries that were over the limit. Thank you.

  5. I’m SO happy that this is a contest with more legitimate judging from the get-go, as opposed to hearts.
    Excited to participate!
When do you think the results will be out?
