The Six Best Secret Passageways

We love books. We would love books even more if they were on a shelf that disguised a door and if the only way to get through the door was to pull the correct book out of the shelf.

We’d love to visit Katharine Tulman’s uncle’s estate in The Dark Unwinding. He’s a crazy inventor with secrets galore, and the winding halls of his manor and the mysterious tunnels beneath seem to hide them all. Katharine is trying to unravel the mystery, but as it comes apart, it seems like she might be out of her league.

Inspired by the mysterious halls and tunnels in The Dark Unwinding, we’ve pulled together a list of the six passages that put all other secret stairwells to shame!

Under the Whomping Willow

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

When Ron gets dragged under the Whomping Willow, the gang has no idea where he’s disappeared to. The tunnel between the Shrieking Shack and Hogwarts, though, becomes a vital part of Hogwarts lore. How many other passageways lurk under Hogwarts? Where did we put that map . . .

The West-Gate into Moria

Lord of the Rings

“Speak, friend, and enter.” Any gate guarded by wordplay is our kind of party! Sure, after entering Moria, the fellowship had some not-so-fun-OMG-is-Gandalf-dead moments, but what’s a party without a few party fouls? And yes, we consider the Balrog a serious party foul.

The Rotating Fireplace

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, a Nazi war room, and three minutes of classic slapstick as Indiana and his father struggle to figure out how to control the trap door before alerting their captors to their escape.

The Wibbly-Wobbly Elevator Wall

“The Power of Three” — Doctor Who

This episode of Doctor Who featured some crazy technology—who wouldn’t want a cube that played “The Chicken Dance” on infinite loop?—but the gelatinous wall-slash-portal to an evil alien HQ made our toes curl in jealousy.

Underground Railroad Passage in Dawn’s House

The Ghost at Dawn’s House — The Babysitters Club Series

Remember when Dawn discovered that there was a secret passage in her room that lead to an unexplored tunnel where runaway slaves used to hide during the Civil War? Yeah, neither did we because it is never mentioned again.

The Scariest Ferry Ride EVER

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Is it a secret passage? Eh. Is it the stuff our childhood nightmares were made of? Unequivocally.

  2. I can’t believe they left out the wardrobe to Narnia, and the rabbit hole to Wonderland! Oh, and there’s also the tunnel behind the waterfall that leads to Farthen Dur in Eragon!
