The Museum of Creepy Crawlies Flash-Fiction

When Evie O’Neil boarded the train from Zenith, Ohio to the Big Apple, she knew she was about to enter a whole new world. But nothing could have prepared her for the Museum of Creepy Crawlies.

Officially the Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult, the old institution—run by her uncle Will—is full of all manner of mysterious items and rich in the history of things that go bump in the night. But in 1926, the museum isn’t the only creepy place in New York. Something evil is terrorizing the city, and the Museum of the Creepy Crawlies might hold the key to destroying it.

In honor of Libba Bray’s new jazz-age mystery, The Diviners, we’ve got an eerie flash-fiction contest for you.

Your challenge: In 150 words or less, write a story that includes one of the following items from the Museum of Creepy Crawlies:

— A Voudon doll

— A bone fragment

— A crystal ball

— An Ojibway Talisman of Protection

— A Freemason’s tools

Poppet dolls

— A ventriloquist’s dummy

— The Diary of Mercy Prowd, Salem Witch

You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, October 1, 2012 to enter the contest. Figment editors will choose one grand-prize winner to receive  a copy of The Diviners signed by Libba Bray and a Figment t-shirt. First and second runners-up will receive copies of The Diviners.

  1. I have not been able to get to a computer for a week now and I was finally able to get on it today. I was wondering if the winners for this contest have already been announced.

  2. I know The Figment Team has a million things to do and this probably isn’t very close to the top of the list, but is there an approximate date that the results will be in by? I hate to be one of those nagging people who keeps asking and asking… but after that contest, I was infected with a horrible case of writers block and I was just hoping I could know ish when the winners would be announced so hopefully it would go away. I understand this is difficult, but thanks for reading this (if you do)!
