Besties: Our Favorite Human/Animal Duos

Sophie, the main character in Endangered by Eliot Schrefer, is spending the summer in the Congo at her mother’s bonobo sanctuary. She’s never gotten too involved before, that is, until she rescues an abused baby bonobo from a trader. She names him Otto and the two form a fast friendship. When the sanctuary is attacked, Sophie and Otto are forced into hiding, and the two have to depend on each other for survival. Can you say unlikely friendship?

Endangered is just one awesome example of a friendship that knows no species, and it got us thinking about our favorite human/animal pairs. These humans and their furry/scaly/feathery pals make great teams despite (and because of) their differences. Check our picks for the best inter-species duos and vote for your favorite below!

Shaggy and Scooby Doo from
Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

It’s the classic tale of a boy and his dog . . . except this dog talks and solves mysteries. United by their love of snacks and fear of anything spooky, Shaggy and Scooby are the best of friends. They’re definitely important members of the Mystery Gang—always helping the gang catch ghosts (a.k.a. creeps in masks who scare people).

Aang and Appa from
Avatar: The Last Airbender

Aang and Appa have been friends for over 100 years, and they’ll do anything to keep each other out of trouble. Appa mostly provides transportation for Aang and his friends, but he’s helped the gang out of a few tight spots, too. Who needs boring pets like fish or hamsters when you could have a six-legged flying bison?

Harry and Hedwig from
Harry Potter

What’s a boy wizard without an awesome supernatural pet? Although Hedwig isn’t actually magical, she has an absurdly fine-tuned ability to understand Harry, and the two have a close connection. Plus, she delivers his mail all over the world. She might not be quite as fast as email, but she’s definitely cuter.

Han Solo and Chewbacca from
Star Wars

Chewbacca’s probably closer to a fur-covered human than an actual animal, but there’s no doubt that he and Han Solo are an amazing cross-species team. Chewie, a Wookiee, is Han’s first mate and co-pilot. Somehow, they work great together, even though Han speaks English and Chewie’s vocabulary seems to consist of a single sound.

Hiccup and Toothless from
How to Train Your Dragon

In Hiccup’s world, dragons are feared above all other creatures. But Toothless (supposedly one of the scariest, most evil dragons EVER) is friendly and loyal, not to mention totally adorable. Hiccup crafts a contraption to help Toothless fly, and in return, Toothless saves Hiccup’s life. Talk about teamwork!

Lyra and Pantalaimon from
His Dark Materials

Pantalaimon is Lyra’s daemon, a shape-shifting animal companion. Throughout the series, Pan takes on the appearance of every animal from a mouse to a dragon, finally settling into the form of a Pine marten. Pan and Lyra balance each other out, and since Pan is the embodiment of Lyra’s soul . . . yeah, you could say they’re pretty close.

  1. That was a hard one! For me it was a close tie between Scooby and Shaggy and Han and Chewy, but they were all awesome picks! In the end Scooby and Shaggy won out. I would also add to the list Darwin and Eliza from the Wild Thornberries (Did anyone else used to watch that show?) and Ron and Rufus from Kim Possible (since I’m on the topic of cartoons… I could go on forever)
