Echo Short-Story Contest

Echo, the second in the Soul Seekers series by Alyson Noël, continues the story of Daire Santos, a teenage girl who has the power to navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead.

Daire and her grandmother live in the small town of Enchantment, New Mexico. With her grandmother’s help, Daire learns to harness the powers of her ancestral legacy. It’s in this small town that Daire meets and falls for Dace, a boy who haunts her dreams. The two share a forbidden love: Dace is allied with the Richters, a family of evil sorcerers Daire is destined to destroy.

Dace and Daire must work together to stop the Richter family before they completely disrupt the balance of good and evil in the world. But one of them might have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to fulfill their shared destiny.

Your challenge:

In 1,200 words or fewer, write a story about someone who can communicate with the dead.


One grand-prize winner with receive signed copies of Fated and Echo by Alyson Noël and a pair of Soul Seeker–inspired feather earrings.

6. You should receive a pop-up confirmation of your entry, and in about two hours or so, your piece should appear among the submissions.

You have until Tuesday, November 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET to enter your story. Voting will run until Tuesday, November 27 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Author Alyson Noël will choose the winners from the top-ten most-hearted entries!

  1. I have a few questions:
    1.) Are we allowed to use characters from our other works?
    2.) How about fan characters we’ve created?
    3.) Does the communicating-with-the-dead thing have to be a natural power of the character’s, or can it be an ability brought about by some special circumstances or external stimuli?

  2. Can I use a another submission idea cause its basically the same thing just shorter. So can I elongate it and resubmit it as this contest? If that makes sense.
