Love hits you when you least expect it, Eleanor and Park can agree with that. Eleanor’s home life isn’t that great and it doesn’t help that she’s bullied on the bus. Park is a bit of a loner, listening to his Walkman, drowning out the crowd.. The two strike up an unlikely friendship that quickly blossoms into something more.
Inspired by the highs and lows of falling in love for the first time in Rainbow Rowell’s novel, Eleanor & Park, we asked you to write a story about first love. You wrote and voted and we sent the top ten most-hearted entries to Rainbow for judging.
Check out the winners below and be sure to congratulate your fellow Figs!
Rainbow says: I love the metaphor of love as a color. How do you explain love? Is it a color? How do you explain love AND color to someone who doesn’t see EITHER the way you do? I think this could be expanded into a slightly longer story, setting up that third lesson.
Congratulations, Michelle! You will receive a signed copy of Eleanor & Park, an advanced copy of Rainbow Rowell’s new book, Fangirl (which won’t be in stores until September), Fall For Anything by Courtney Summers, The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda and Beneath the Glitter by Elle and Blair Fowler.
Rainbow says: This is so touching! And sad! The construction really reminded me of an old-school tragic story song. Like “Last Kiss” or Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang.”
Rainbow says: The list works really well here as a narrative structure. Nice job.
Congrats, Jasmine! You will receive a copy of Eleanor & Park.
