Figment’s Summer Fan-Fiction Contest!

“Fanfiction is what literature might look like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. They don’t do it for money. That’s not what it’s about. The writers write it and put it up online just for the satisfaction. They’re fans, but they’re not silent, couchbound consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the culture in its own language.” – Lev Grossman

We know you’re not sealed in a bunker, but you are DEFINITELY pop-culture junkies. You solve mysteries with Sherlock and John, you battle villains with The Avengers, and you travel through space and time with the Doctor. So why not get rewarded for it?

To celebrate the wonderful world of fanfic, we’re hosting a fan-fiction contest!

In 750 words or fewer, write a fan fiction story. Tag your writing FanFicContest. That’s it!

SuperWhoLock crossover? Sounds great. Legend of Korra AU? PERFECT! The diary entries of Sheldon Cooper? Go for it.

One grand prize winner will receive three surprise books and a Figment tote.
One second place winner will receive two surprise books and a Figment tote.

  1. I was writing fanfiction before I did original work! Talk about a contest right up my alley. :3 I’m definitely entering this.

    • I know! I was on this site called before I found this site, and I wrote a ton of fan fiction. I think I’ll do pretty well.

    • As long as your entry is:
      1. A new writing started during the entry period for the contest
      2. Tagged with the correct tags
      you’re all good to go!

  2. How long after we submit our entry do we receive the pop-up notification? This is an awesome contest, btw. Perfect for those who love fanfiction 😀

    • The pop-up should show up immediately, but if it didn’t, as long as it’s a new writing and tagged correctly, you’re good to go!

  3. Hello! I was wondering if I could do a Fanfic of one of my little brothers video games. It’s not the traditional fanfic, so I just wanted to be sure.

  4. Oh, so does this apply to every contest? I’m English…

    1. Eligibility

Figment’s Summer Fan-Fiction Contest (the “Promotion”) is open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States (including District of Columbia) and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are at least thirteen (13) years old as at the time of entry.

  5. I actually have a fan fic that I deleted then redid, delleted then redid. I actually didn’t finish it. I just did now. So it’s sorta brand new. I changed a lot of things over tiem so it IS brand new.
    Is this okay?

  6. Is there a rating system that we have to abide by? Like, is it only pg-13 or can we write something a bit more mature? Nothing explicit but in terms of violence/language/references?

  7. What if someone writes a fic and none of the judges are familiar with the source material? Doesn’t that put them at an immediate disadvantage without even knowing it?

  8. My short story is more than 750 words. Its about 867 words is that allowed or do i need to make it under 750. Thanks

  9. Can we change our email during the contest? Or will that effect the judging? I would like to change my old email that I have now to my new email, but I’ve already entered the contest.

  10. Okay so I think I followed the rules oerfectly to enter but when I hit publish now I’m not getting the pop-up that I think I amk supposed to. I dont know if it’s in the submissions either. What should I do?

    • As long as you submitted a new writing and tagged it correctly, you’re all good to go for the contest!

  11. When it says that “figment editors will choose the winner from the top ten most-hearted entries” does it mean hearted by other Figment users, as in your entry has to be popular on the website to have a chance at winning?

    Thanks for your time! 😀

  12. I read the rules and I couldn’t find anything about promoting our story on other websites, is that allowed?

    • You are allowed to promote your story anywhere, but only hearts on Figment count, and you must have a Figment account to heart stories.

  13. I wish I had known about this sooner! I won’t do my best work if it’s rushed, so I’m going to wait until next time! But thanks for doing this!! (:
