  1. Am I going to create a story and have a protagonist and antagonist and have someone else who is hated and fear by them? I am a little confused.

    • In other words the main character is a neutral character whom only seeks for his or her benefits if they even are interested in any of them. Ex: Catwoman, Achillies, and to a certain extent Bella since the vampire feared her for a certain amount and the werewolves feared her as well.

  2. I have a question about the prompt. Is it asking us to create a villain for the protagonist and antagonist of a story we are already writing? Or is it asking us to create an entirely new story that has a protagonist, an antagonist, and a villain for both of them?

    • Hi Dan! Create a new story within 750 words with an antagonist, protagonist and a villain to them both. Good luck!

  3. Hey! How are the winners decided? Is it by hearts or reviews or do all the stories get read and judged?

  4. I have a couple of questions:

Does the story have to be told from the POV of, or be about the villain, or can the story just be about the conflict that is created for both the protagonist and antagonist because of the villain?

Also, is there a place where we can read the other short stories that are entered, or is it a closed contest where we can’t see the other entries? Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I’m new to Figment and the contests here.

    • It can be however the author (yourself) interprets the prompt. As long as it is 750 words and below and has those three different types of characters then the rest is up to you!

  5. When we write it do we have to introduce the antagonist and protagonist(Their back story)? Because when I started writing I did, but I wasn’t sure.

  6. Can the villain be something like a tornado, tsunami, or other disaster that cold cause serious harm or kill the antagonist and protagonist? Just wondering.

    • Hi Razzle! We ask that you create a character. If your natural disaster is based off of a character that’s fine but a simple storm won’t necessarily count. Good luck!

  7. So we are creating a new story with a protagonist and an antagonist who both have an enemy that isn’t the other. Does it matter if we start it off like a time jump (what would be later in a story) or should we start it from the beginning?

    • That’s all up to how you interpret the prompt. Either would be fine as long as you have those three different character types. Good luck!

  8. Does the villain have to be an actual human being? Or can it be something that is not materialistic but still is a villain to both the protagonist and antagonist?

  9. I’m slightly confused. Within the 750 should we have a complete short story or should we have just introduced the protagonist, antagonist and villain with a main insight of the plot?

  10. So, it’s basically that we just write a story in 750 words or fewer, that has somebody who is like a enemy or villain to the protagonist, the main character, and antagonist, the ‘opponent’?

  11. Um, it says the story has to be 750 or fewer words, but I can’t see how much words I’ve wrote-I did write something, yes, but it says 0 words. Now what? I can’t switch a device.

    • Once your story is published you should see a word count on the story’s main page. If not, feel free to also paste it in a word document like Microsoft Word to get an idea. If you’re having issues getting your word count to show on Figment feel free to reach out to admin@figment.com. Thanks and good luck!

  12. Hello! I’ve already received a confirmation message for the submission of my published piece, but can I continue to make edits until the deadline? And will all the edits be automatically submitted? Thank you! 🙂

  13. So I made a character who is BOTH the antagonist and the protagonist. Then I made another character who is the main character’s enemy.

Is that allowed? Or do I have to make two separate characters for the antagonist and the protagonist?

  14. hey if a person had multiple personalities and one is evil but they hate what they are id that Okay for the contest?

  15. Can I take an inanimate object and personify it? Like have the protagonist and antagonist treat it as a “villain”, but not actually have it be a person? Ex: The Sun, a cliff, etc.

    • Sure, if that’s how you interpret the prompt – go for it! We simply asked that you create a “character” – the rest is up to you!

  16. Ok, so, general contest question… Would it be possible for one to keep all contest entries in one book- one in each chapter? Say which chapter the current one is in the description? If word count is a problem I could always put that at the top or bottom, too. This is because I love doing the contests but I don’t want my profile covered with them and burying my stories. So would that work…?

  17. Can there be only two characters in the story? If the antagonist hates the protagonist, and the protagonist hates herself?

    • Hi Ashnika – there is a View All Entries button at the bottom of the July Writing Challenge contest page. I hope that helps!

  18. So I’m going to be gone for a week in the middle of August. How long does it normally take to judge the entries?

    • Winners for the July Writing Challenge will most likely be announced on social media and across next week’s Newsletter!

  19. Any ideas on a situation that would have these three characters. I’m having trouble coming up with a plot situation dealing with the requirements.

  20. I do not understand the 5th point in how to enter. I have written my story and tagged julychallenge on it but no notice that I entered popped up. To enter, I should just tag julychallenge right? Is there something more that I should do other than tag? Please tell me.

    • Hi Dora, that should be it! Sometimes there is a delay with the pop-up. If you want to be sure – look for your story in the “View All Entries” section. Good luck!
