The Subway Phone Contest

Wha-? What was that? Could it be… *drumroll*…
Yes, yes. Quiet down, please, screaming crowd.

Write a shorty story, no longer than 1000 words, that is inspired by the video above. The characters, details, and genre are up to you. Is this a love story or a murder mystery? Is she the hero or the villain? Your story can be set before, during, or after the events in the clip. Be creative with it! Your only limit is your imagination. And the word count.

And yes, we made this video. Apologies for the LOST ending.

Instructions on how to enter:

-Create a new writing
-Tag it phonecontest
-Be sure to press “Publish Now”
-Wait the hour or so it sometimes takes for entries to show up BELOW.

The deadline is Sunday, March 6 at midnight EST. Entries will be accepted immediately. One entry per person. As always, no contest entry promotion of any kind is allowed on Figment. Then YOU decide the finalists by voting on your favorite entries; you can vote until Friday, March 11th at 6pm EST. The top hearted entries will become finalists. The winner will receive the two must-have guides On Writing and Bird by Bird. You will get copyedited and reviewed on 40,000 words of anything (poetry or prose) by yours truly (that’s me, Lindsay — I’m no Hemingway, but I will give your work all my love & attention!). Good luck, Figmenti!

Reality, please excuse my rudeness as I take a brief break from you, and instead proceed to spend all of my time writing about subways from now until 6 March.

(Also, loved the Figment sticker on the phone–adds a nice touch!)

    • Hey Jeanne-
Unfortunately, we need to be strict about the word count to make it fair for everyone. Try and edit it down to below 1000 words in order to be eligible to win. Good luck!

    • “Please read something of mine” is fine as long as you have more than the contest entry posted. “Please read my newest work” or “Please don’t read any of my poems” or otherwise indicating to your entry is not acceptable. Heart-for-heart comments are not allowed either. Hope this clears things up!

  2. I have now watched this a ridiculous amount of times. I’ve got a few ideas in mind; I can’t wait to start writing!

  3. Can we alter what happens in the video a little. Such as not having her run away? Nothing to major. Just wondering!

  4. Man, I hope I do well for this contest. None of mine have ever made it to the finals, not enough people heart it.

  5. I really want to enter this contest because it looks really intriguing but my problem is that I can’t see the video – for some reason my computer wont show me. Is there any other way i could see it or can someone tells me exactly what happens in it please? Help would be much appreciated 🙂

  7. I don’t know how I’m supposed to get any hearts on my story without promoting it. I’ve gotten only ONE heart! This is SO hard! 🙁

  8. I agree with Joshua, it’s really difficult to get hearts without promotion, especially if you’re a new writer who hasn’t yet built any connections on the site or have as many followers as others do. Maybe hearts aren’t the way to determine the winner?

  9. Mine really should be longer….it’s an ending, not a story, but I can’t think of a way to give it a beginning and a middle without going over 1,000!!! The pain! The turmoil!

  10. I don’t know if I actually got in under the line. Does midnight on the 6th mean the night of the 5th or the midnight on the night of the 6th ? If the latter, my entry hasn’t shown up yet, if the former, sorry to waste your time.

  11. How many finalists will there be? I hope mine does well! Seven are ahead of me and this is great considering I have 10 followers.

  12. I entered a story into this contest, and yet when I browse through the entries, it is not there. Its called “Below 57th Street” and it shows up in my writings, but not here. I was just wondering if there was a problem, and what I could do to fix it, hopefully before the voting is over. Thx!

    • Hey Luna — when did you enter? I don’t see your entry in the list of entries either. The “see all entries” shows only those entries submitted before the deadline…? Hope I can help!

      • I entered about 8pm my time (mountain time)on Sunday, which would be 10 pm Eastern time I believe, so it should have been before the deadline.

  13. I wrote my story, and it’s not like others… more like a kinda obssessed girl… and the phone is not that scary 🙂
    Great contest idea 😉

  14. when will the finalists be published? it is past march 11th 🙂
I wonder who the top ten are. I am assuming it will be top ten
