The Mustache Film Project

Haven’t you always wanted your story to be made into a movie? That’s why we’re hosting the Mustache Film Project.

Write a story that takes place in a city (any city) and has a character with a mustache. (Your mustache character doesn’t have to be a man and the main character must be in the story somewhere, even if it’s a tiny mention. Bonus points for creative mustache person placement.) Entries should be 500 words long or fewer.

We’ll pick the one we like the best out of the finalists, and make your story into a movie! (Starring the mods.)

How to enter:

-Read the full rules at the bottom of this post
-Create a new writing
-Tag it mustachecontest
-Be sure to press “Publish Now”
-Wait the hour or so it sometimes takes for entries to show up BELOW.

The deadline is Thursday, August 11th at 6:00 PM EST. Then you can decide the winners by voting on your favorite entries; you can vote until Monday, August 15th at noon EST. The two top hearted entries will win. The first place winner will receive a Figment tote and have their story interpreted by the Figment staff and made into a short movie (2-3 minutes). The runner up will receive a copy of The Wikkeling, receive a Figment tote, and get highlighted on our blog along with the first place contestant. Good luck everyone!

1. One entry per person, please.
2. The promotion of your contest entry is not allowed on Figment. This includes self-promotion and the promotion of other users’ contest entries in the Figment forums, the comments and reviews of stories, the comments on users’ profiles, and the Figment Facebook page. Independent promotion on sites unrelated to Figment, like personal Facebook or Twitter accounts, is fine.
3. Works must be published between the announcement of the contest and the closure of the contest. Entries created before the start date or after the end date will not be included in the pages of contest entries and will be ineligible to win. This means a new story must be created for the contest; adapting an old story published before the start of the contest will make the entry ineligible to win.
4. The rules of the contest are both strict and open to interpretation by a moderator.
5. It is the user’s responsibility to properly tag the story so that the story appears within the contest submissions. Untagged or improperly tagged stories will not be shown with the submissions and will not be eligible to win.
6. The creation of multiple accounts to heart or otherwise vote for your contest entry on Figment is prohibited, and may result in the disqualification of that entry, the deletion of your Figment account, and/or the blocking of your IP address permanently from the site, at the moderator’s discretion.

  1. I DON’T EVEN CARE IF I WIN THIS ONE, THIS IS KIND OF REALLY REALLY AMAZING!
Love the prompt, really excited to write an entry 🙂
So there will be a winner and a runner-up?

  2. I’m confused…do you guys pick the finalists, and then we vote, or do we vote, and you guys pick out of the top 2 entries?

    • Well, let’s just say that it has to TELL a story, but doesn’t have to be in prose? But it can’t just be descriptive – it has to have a plot. Hope this helps!

  3. The idea was simple enough, and the payoff most awesome, that I’ve decided to enter. 😉 Good luck to everyone who adds their story to the mix!

    • The city should have a skyline and a grid-like street system. (Not like a “Wild West” movie, more like New York or L.A.)

  4. Does the character have to be a man? Because I have a really good idea involving a woman with a moustache and beard (bearded lady :D), but I wasn’t sure when I read the rules.

  5. Is it alright if the male character with the mustache is a boy, not a man? I have an awesome idea involving one.. 😛

  6. Can our story be about a man who really REALLY wants a mustache but doesn’t have one? (He *sorta* gets one at the end) 😀

  7. My entry isnt popping up even though i submitted it this morning around noon, and thats 6 and a half hours later… i know i tagged it correctly, and that its published, and im already getting hearts and comments and stuff, but its not coming :/

  8. This is a great contest! How did you Figgies know I am a brilliant mustache fan?? Anywho, I was wondering about the ‘bonus points’. What does, ‘creative mustache placement’ mean?

    • It means we’re welcoming you to be creative about where and when you put the mustache person in your story. Hope this helps!

  9. It’s ok if the mustache isn’t like a HUGE theme of the story, right? Just as long as it’s mentioned– even just in passing?

  10. Can we actually write a screenplay? Because I have…and, heres an example, how many words would this be? One? Three? Or Five? (Hint: pick one or three to make me happy.)
    This person: (Walking slowly) Hello.

  11. Yay! I got in! Just out of curiosity, do you guys read the entries, and/or decide whether they follow the rules, or o you just post whatever gets tagged? I was wondering.

  12. Wait, I’m confused. How many finalists will there be? Because it says above, “The two top hearted entries will win” but then Malone in the comments said that the top 15 would be the finalists. So is it 2 or 15? Thanks! 🙂

  13. I accidentally forgot to close off my entry for the contest, so now it has a lot of comments/hearts. Will I be disqualified? I swear on the grave of my grandmother IT WAS NOT ON PURPOSE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me that there is some way that I can still be in th contest!!!
Fingers crossed and eyes cast downward in shame,
    Kinsey Alexis

  14. Okay so tonight I was casually talking about the contest with some people on the general/random board and all of a sudden someone was like THIS THREAD IS FUN SO I WILL GO HEART YOUR ENTRY. I was like WAIT NO IDK IF THAT’S FAIR and /THEN/ she was like AND I’M GONNA TELL ALL MY FRIENDS TO HEART IT!

    I told her not to but I want to know if my place in this contest has now been jeopardized ;-;

    • I’d also like to mention that the thread was not originally about the contest, but later turned into a thought-dump on my part, and this contest happened to be in my thoughts.

Sorry if I sound paranoid but this is my first contest and it’s kind of important to me. :/

      • I have just been informed that the girl I was talking about did not get the chance to tell her friends about my entry before I stopped her. Phew.
