Simone Elkeles: How to Make a Heart-Throbby Book Trailer

Simone Elkeles from Figment.comSimone Elkeles, author of the Perfect Chemistry series (including Chain Reaction, which you can begin reading on Figment here) teaches us a thing or two about recruiting hotties and writing a series that inspires.

You need four ingredients to make a heart-throbby book trailer:

A book with a heart-throbby hero.

Lucky for me, I have three of those: Alex Fuentes in Perfect Chemistry, Carlos Fuentes in Rules of Attraction, and Luis Fuentes in Chain Reaction. I can’t help it…I have to fall for my heroes as I write them. I’m not attracted to B-type heroes or wimpy heroes. I need strong guys with tons of swagger to be my heroes. Therefore, I need strong guys with tons of swagger to be in my book trailers. Which brings me to…

Guys who look and act like your heart-throbby heroes.

Believe me, I don’t know how I got so lucky. I emailed Alexander F. Rodriguez because I’d seen him in Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” video and asked him to be Alex Fuentes in my videos. He agreed, and I felt like the luckiest girl on the earth. He’s not only gorgeous, but he’s got the best personality! When Giancarlo Vidrio auditioned to be Carlos, I stopped the audition process because I knew I’d found my Carlos. I got chills watching him, because he was my character come to life! It was totally surreal. I took my chances and emailed Gabriel Chavarria off of Facebook – I’d seen him in Freedom Writers and really thought he’d be perfect to play Luis. When he said yes, the Fuentes brothers were complete. What I didn’t know is that they’d act like brothers on and off the set! You can watch the behind-the-scenes footage on YouTube if you search selkeles.

A great friend who knows people who know people…

How was I going to pull off making a “movie trailer” as a book trailer? Again lucky for me, a friend from high school, Pete Jones, has connections in the movie business. He hooked me up with a producer and Director of Photography. I have to say that I wouldn’t have known the first thing about movie-making and I was very lucky to have Pete set me up and direct the trailers for me.  The trailers are awesome because Pete and the crews/actors on set made them awesome.

The most amazing fans in the world!

Seriously, I have the most amazing fans. They spread the word about my trailers and they go viral. I am so lucky to have passionate, loyal fans who find me on Facebook and Twitter. They know when my trailers are coming out, and share them with their friends. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my fans…I write because they inspire me!

Missed the trailer? Lucky you! It’s available on Figment here.
