Pretty Little Contest

Hey Figlets! Me again. And some of you have been up to no good since the last time we talked. Don’t try and deny it; I can see everything. You can’t keep secrets.

Speaking of secrets, I’m here to let you know that you have the chance to get your story read by the woman who weaves our careful web of lies, deception, and—let’s face it—killer heels. She puts the “cute” in “Imacuteveryone” and the “classy” in “I’ll kick you straight in the classy.” Yes, you have a chance to get your story read by none other than Sara Shepard (author of the Pretty Little Liars series), queen of all things pretty, little, and liar-y. She created Emily, Hanna, Aria, and Spencer, and their twisted, mysterious frenemy A—who happens to be one of my closest friends.

In addition to getting your writing scoped by a pro author, you can win signed copies of the newest Liars books, Ruthless and Pretty Little Secrets (which you can start reading here on Figment). But you’re not in it for the material prizes, are you? Of course not…

Your challenge, if you can handle it: Write a story about a group that has a secret in no more than 1,500 words.

How To Enter:
1. Read the full rules here.
2. Create an account on Figment.com.
3. Start a new writing. Your entry must be 1,500 words or fewer.
4. Tag that writing with secretscontest on the Details tab.
5. Press “Publish Now.”
6. You should receive a pop-up confirmation of your entry, and in about two hours or so, your piece should appear among the submissions.

You have until 11:59 p.m. EST on January 16 to enter. Voting runs until 11:59 p.m EST on January 23, at which point the ten most-hearted entries will be sent to Sara Shepard who will choose the two winners. Both winners will receive signed copies of Ruthless and Pretty Little Secrets, and first place will also receive a Figment tee-shirt.

Until we meet again, I’ll be keeping an eye on you.

  1. Once again, all the awesome contests exclude the Figlets up north in Canada. 🙁 What did we do to deserve such punishment? *shakes fist at sky* I miss the olden days when Canada was loved too. *sigh* The woes of the world.:p

  2. My story ended up being more creepy than cute, but I still think I’ve got a good chance. Lookks like a really good book!:)

  3. Could it be a group and they all have a secret/secrets but they don’t know each other’s secrets? Or do they all have to have the same secret?
(Sorry if this is a little confusing)

  4. Are we allowed to enter a work into multiple contests at the same time? Because I would like to use the story i wrote for this in the Cinder contest too….

    • Hi Natalie,

Yes, you may work on multiple contest entries at the same time, but contest entries must be original, so you may not enter the same piece in multiple contests. Let me know if you have more questions! rebecca@figment.com

  5. This isn’t a question particularly about this contest, but about figment in general. I was wondering how people make customized covers with pictures on them, not just the generic ones that figment gives you.

    • Hi jessica,

There are a number of programs like Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Paint that help you create your own covers, in addition to online sites like picnik.com and pixlr.com. Have fun!

  6. Hi! I’m just wondering. My story is already posted. What do you suggest I do now? Promote it? How do people or yourself vote for the story? I don’t see a vote button. Hahaha! Sorry! I barely found out about this site and I am loving it already. Need to get used to it too.

    • Hi Sutton,

Welcome to Figment! What you can do now is start reading the work of other users. More often than not, Figs will return the favor, and you may receive “hearts” on your story that will help it win. Just please do not directly advertise your story on Figment (although you may do so to family and friends not on the website). Good luck! Email any other questions to rebecca@figment.com.

  7. I feel like everyone’s story is about murder, or being pregnant, or a ” forbidden romance”. None of them are slightly sci-fi like mine…

  8. I tagged my story, and I hope it’s showing up in the contest entries. Writing for this was really fun! I love Pretty Little Liars and Sara Shepard!

  9. I am sad. I had written my story two days before the contest ended, and accidently tagged it with ‘seceretscontest’ instead of ‘secretscontest’, so mine didn’t get entered because of that little mistak. 🙁

  10. If possible could Ms. Rebecca respond to this one please?

Hi again, Thank you sooooo much for activating my account. It was a present from my dear friend Allison. You and her emailed and it just made my day when Allison logged on my account for me. I really owe you one. Thank you once again for everything.

  11. This contest is a great opportunity for writers that love Pretty Little Liars, but I think the voting part is a little unfair. I personally think that Sara Shepard should read ALL of the stories and decide who wins, not just ten stories that have the most hearts. It’s a little unfair to someone who might have a great story but doesn’t have a shot at winnin because her story doesn’t have enough hearts.

    • Hi Tia,

Part of it is certainly telling your friends and family about your story, but another way to get reads/hearts is simply to read/heart/review other users’ work. Many times, users will return the favor. 🙂
