Cinder Contest Winners!

What happens when you give a swashbuckling pirate a happily ever after? We’re not quite sure, but in the meantime, congratulations to these mind-bendingly good entries, chosen by Marissa Meyer herself as winners of the Cinder Contest! See Marissa’s comments about each of the winning entries below.

First Place:Gingerbread Man” by Meghan Scott

Marissa said: “What a clever and hilarious story! I laughed out loud all the way through. I love how you married the simplistic fairy-tale style with your own writing voice, and how the story gradually came to life as it moved away from fairy tale and into horror. The inclusion of the other fairy tale characters (Old McDonald, Rumpelstiltskin, and Jack) was unexpected and quite fun. I really enjoyed this story!”

Second Place:Metal Miracle” by Alas Mya Nishels

Marissa said: “What an awesome steampunk ghost story! I was caught up in the intrigue and excitement from the first paragraphs and read eagerly wanting to know what the Miracle’s secret was. You also did an excellent job of bringing Amelia and Danny to life in so few pages – I felt that I really came to know them. The ending was a perfect bittersweet conclusion. Great job!”

Third Place:The Termite Trap” by Destiny Howell

Marissa said: “Wow – your dialogue and world-building are so fresh! I’m amazed at all the small details you were able to fit into this story, making it feel real and concrete without bogging down the flow of the story. I’m definitely intrigued by Cooper, Molly, the Pride, the Orchestra – the whole underground system set up in this school. This would make a great opening to a longer story or even a novel!

Each winner will receive a copy of Cinder by Marissa Meyer. The first-place winner will also receive a $15 Amazon gift card, and the second-place winner will also receive a Figment tote bag.
