We love kick. We love kick-ass. And we LOVE kick-ass women.
Today, The Athena Film Festival honors women in the film industry for their being awesomenessness. And? It is essentially what determines our Netflix queue for the next month. Nothing but lady-writers and lady-directors until we’ve ravaged the oeuvre of the nominees. So we were BEYOND beyond stoked to see that two of our favorite film-fatales were being honored (and not only because we were already familiar with their work).
Theresa Rebeck is being honored “for Her Excellence as a Playwright and Author of Films, Books and Television.” Theresa is also the playwright of Seminar, on Broadway now starring Alan Rickman. You have a chance to go see Alan Rickman (in person!) if you enter our contest here.
Liz Meriwether is being honored along with Diablo Cody, Dana Fox, and Lorene Scafaria–the Fempire— “for Their Creativity and Sisterhood.” Liz wrote No Strings Attached, the romantic comedy starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. She’s also the creator of New Girl, the Fox comedy starring Zooey Deschanel. She’s also taking questions right now in the Figment forums, so if you’ve ever dreamed of being a television writer, chat with her now!
