In The Goddess Test, the first book in Aimée Carter’s Goddess series, Kate survived a brutal test and won both immortality and the hand of Henry, god of the Underworld. She succeeded where other girls failed—girls who paid with their lives. You’d think Kate would be prepared for anything, right?
What about meeting her sister for the first time?
What about meeting Henry’s ex-wife?
What about meeting the only woman who can help her save the Underworld?
How about meeting the one woman who is all three of those things?
That’s what happens to Kate in Carter’s latest book, Goddess Interrupted. In honor of the novel, we have an ex-tastic writing contest for you!
Your challenge, in 1,200 words or fewer, is to use one of the following three prompts to craft a story:
- A character meets his or her partner’s ex.
- A character has to work together with his or her partner’s ex.
- A character has to work with his or her ex, and isn’t quite sure they shouldn’t get back together.
How to Enter:
1. Read the full rules.
2. Create an account on Figment.com.
3. Start a new writing of 1,200 words or fewer.
4. Tag your writing with goddessinterrupted on the Details tab.
5. Press “Publish Now.”
6. You should receive a pop-up confirmation of your entry, and in about two hours or so, your piece should appear among the submissions.
Be creative, be emotional, be humorous, be real, be dramatic. Make us feel the scene! You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on April 10 to enter your piece. Voting will run until 6:00 p.m. ET on April 17, at which point the 10 most-hearted entries will be sent to Aimée Carter and her editors at Harlequin Teen, who will choose the winners.
The grand-prize winner will receive copies of Aimée Carter’s Goddess Interrupted and The Goddess Test . . . PLUS Julie Kagawa’s entire Iron Fey series—including a signed copy of The Iron Knight!—and Julie’s notevenoutyet Immortal Rules.

The second-place winner will receive copies of Goddess Interrupted and The Goddess Test, plus Cayla Kluver’s Legacy series (Legacy and Allegiance) and Inside by Maria V. Snyder.

The third-place winner will receive copies of Goddess Interrupted, Crave by Melissa Darnell, and The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross.

The fourth-place winner will receive copies of Goddess Interrupted, Saving June by Hannah Harrington, and On a Dark Wing by Jordan Dane.

Should the characters be teens/young adults, or are older characters just as good?
The characters can be any age!
Does it have to be dating or married partners or can it be business partners?
The prompt only says partner, so it can be whatever type of partner you’d like!
Can I use more than one of the prompts as long as I am still following the 1,200 words requirement?
As long as you use at least one of the prompts and stay within the word limit, you may incorporate elements of another prompt, sure!
Since the Goddess books are based off of myths, can our story be a re-imagining of an existing myth or fairy tale? Or do you want completely new and original characters? Also, are there guidlines or limitations on the content? (Like, must be suitable for readers 12 and up?) Thanks!
It can definitely be based off of myths. The stories need to conform to the terms of service on Figment and our content guidelines, as well as the official rules of the contest.
I just entered and tagged it but the pop up box didn’t show up. My entry is Crossroads.
Hey Ami-
If you tagged it properly and created it after the announcement of the contest, you’re all set.
Are we allowed to curse?
Hey Tali-
All entries must conform to Figment’s terms of service and guidelines and the official rules. So, cursing is allowed in context!
I tried tagging my work and I didn’t get the conformation pop up
Never mind. My entry still showed up in the contest
By work, can it be having to work together to figure something out, like why they broke up, or does it have to be working like at a job or something?
Any type of work!
Does it have to be original or can it be fanfiction?
Hey Nika-
It should be original fiction or inspired by characters that are in the public domain (like Austen’s characters or Dickens’s). It should not incorporate copyrighted characters.
Can you enter more than once?
One entry per person! Thanks
Is it consider cheating if you swap hearts and the story that the other person is heart-ing is the contest entry?
Hey Yarlening-
Not anymore, no. Courtesy would be to let the person know that it is an entry, so they don’t feel tricked. It is not against the rules, though!
Can any famous literary works like Pride and Prejudice or Alice in Wonderland be mentioned?
I know the word limit is 1200 words but I am about 67 words over that. Does this make me disqualified from the contest? I would shorten if I could but I really like my entry and I’m afraid it wouldn’t make sense if I subtracted that many words. Is there any way I would be able to still be in the contest even though I went over?
Hey Lauren-
Unfortunately no. The word count is strictly binding. Try and get your entry under the limit to be eligible to win!
What are the cover requirements? Can we use google to help make covers?
Hey Rayen-
You can edit your covers in any software you’d like, but all content you use must be created by you.
Best,
Emily
I’m doing the third prompt, and I was wondering if it was okay if I wrote in the ex’s point of view instead of the ex’s partner.
Yup! The point of view doesn’t matter as long as the prompt is fulfilled.
Thnxs!~
=)
Are all contests here only available to US and Canada citizens? It seems rather unfair to me.
Hey-
Most of our contests are only open to US and Canadian citizens, but we hope to be able to expand entry soon!
Best,
Emily
Well I hope you do soon.
I know many people from other countries that would like to take part in these contests.
I kind of miss the contests on inkpop right now…
Anyway, thanks for answering.
Have a nice day!
When is the deadline? I can’t seem to find it anywhere…
nevermind,i found it
Hey Sarah-
You have until 11:59 p.m. ET on April 10 to enter!
Brilliant prompts!! Haha Now I have so many ideas I don’t know where to start! Thanks for the contest.
Done that! My story is called Imaginary Friends
so happy with it!
Is it for US only?
Hey-
US and Canada (but not Quebec).
-Emily
Can it be written/posted in chapters? As long as it doesnt go over the word limit, of course.
Yup!
Hi, I wrote a short story, “Our Spiteful Rivalry” for this contest. However, when I put the tag goddessinterrupted in, I never receive any pop up (as if of now)…
Hey Sanna-
If you posted your story after the announcement of the copy and tagged it correctly, you’re entered. The pop-up sometimes doesn’t show up for people, but you’re still set!
