Unbreak My Heart Flash-Fiction Week: Day One

In Melissa Walker’s Unbreak My Heart, Clementine thinks she has it all: a best friend and a boy she’s falling for. Unfortunately, it turns out that Clem’s best friend, Amanda, and her crush, Ethan, are together. And even though Clem would never betray Amanda’s trust, her relationship develops into something it shouldn’t be. Clem becomes a social outcast, no one at school will speak to her, while Ethan, continues his life as if nothing happened.

Just when things are at their lowest, Clem’s family decides to spend the summer sailing along the Illinois River on their boat The Possibility. How will Clem survive her summer in exile?

The way everyone gets over a broken heart: music. Clem’s escape is her iPod and her excellent taste in music.

This week, we’re hosting a five-day flash-fiction contest in celebration of the songs that get Clem through her tough times. Every day, we’ll post a song featured in Unbreak My Heart. Your task: Use the song as inspiration for a story of 150 words or fewer. You can respond to each prompt once, but you only have until Friday, June 8 at 11:59 p.m. ET, so get writing!

6/8 Prompt:
Write a story inspired by “Clementine” by Elliot Smith.
Remember to tag your piece both UnbreakMyHeart and UnbreakFlash5!

6/4 Prompt:

We’re starting it off right with INXS:

Write a story of 150 words or fewer inspired by “Beautiful Girl” by INXS.

I hit Shuffle just to see what comes up, and when I hear the strains of “Beautiful Girl” by INXS, I feel a tear well in my eye. Like, instantly. I thought they’d all dried up, but no. I swear I deleted this playlist, but I must have had another copy of “Beautiful Girl” stored. I let myself be sad for thirty seconds, and then I angrily wipe away the tear.

  1. Hey. So I tagged mine and everything but I didn’t receive a pop up confirmation. My story also hasn’t appeared in the contest entries thing. Do you have any idea why?

    • Hey Indy-

As long as the story was created on Figment after the announcement of the contest and is tagged correctly, you’re entered! If either of those two are not correct, your entry might not show up.

  2. My entry, Twisted Beauty, is centered around cutting and depression, but I never really stated it. I was reading the rules and guidelines and it said something about no harm to you or others in your story. Will I have to re-write my piece?

    • Hey Caroline-

You should be fine. A story that centers around difficult issues doesn’t necessarily promote them.
