Unbreak My Heart Flash-Fiction Week: Day Four

So far, your Unbreak My Heart playlist has included “Beautiful Girl” by INXS; “Must I Paint You a Picture” by Billy Bragg; and Skinny Love” by Bon Iver. Melissa Walker (through her protagonist, Clem) has a pretty great ear for music. That’s good, because the only way Clem can escape from her life as a social outcast, stuck aboard a sailboat all summer with her family, is by plugging in her iPod and jamming out.

Yesterday, we mentioned the playlist that Clem made for Ethan, her best friend Amanda’s boyfriend. “Skinny Love” may be a revealing song, but the first song that Clem includes on the playlist is “You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift. Clem was clearly swimming in dangerous waters before she headed out on the Illinois River!

Today’s Prompt:

Write a story of 150 words or fewer inspired by “You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift.

All I could think about was how much I wanted that playlist. I had never felt so excited and tingly and buzzy about a guy.

I copied and pasted out back-and-forth messaging sessions into a doc, then put it in a folder that, for stealth’s sake, I called “Every Once in a While.” That’s the name of a country song that my mom always turned up the volume for in the car, and it makes me feel warn inside to hear it.

That’s when I started planning a mix for him too. The first song on it?  “You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift. I was in deep.

    • Hey Alex-

As long as the entry was posted after the announcement of the contest, is published, and is tagged properly, you’re all set!

  1. When you say inspired by the song, does that mean the story is similar or can it just have a mention of the song?
