J.K. Rowling’s New Book Cover Released!

There is genuine giddiness at Figment HQ right now. Downright giggles. And the reason? Little, Brown has officially released the cover for The Casual Vacancy, J.K. Rowling’s latest novel, which will be released on September 27th.

The surprisingly simple cover of The Casual Vacancy has us asking one big question: What is that giant black X?

According to the (brief) summary by Little, Brown, we’re thinking it’s a vote. The novel opens with the death of Barry Fairbrother, a member of the parish council, leaving a vacancy on the council (get it?). This vacancy is anything but casual (we did it again!) turning the seemingly idyllic English town of Pagford into a war zone.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils . . . Pagford is not what it first seems. —Little, Brown

Plot, character, and cover art aside, the best part of today’s news: Little, Brown confirms the 512 page count.

Looks like J.K. Rowling plans to give us at least a couple days of respite from our continued mourning of our friend Harry.

  1. There’s a lot of pressure on JK on this novel, as the older part of her demographic hopes that her magic can carry over series and genre. Hopefully, this will be as good as the Harry Potter series.

  2. I can’t wait for this new book! Hopefully it will be as good as the Harry Potter series; though that will be very hard to beat! She seems to have been working on this book for quite a while, so I have high expectations!

  3. I’m afraid of this book. People expect it to be just as amazing and magical as the Harry Potter books, but let’s face it: that’s nearly impossible. Yes, I hope it’s an amazing book that I’ll love, but reaching the level of Harry Potter, a seven-book series meant for all ages that spanned years of our lives, is not something I think any one book can do successfully, even one written by J.K. Rowling. It’s a totally different thing from what we know, and everyone should be prepared for differences.

Though, I am excited to read it.
