Mystical Protection: Our Favorite Totems

In Magisterium by Jeff Hirsch, Glenn Morgan is forced to flee across the Rift and into the unknown land that lies beyond. Before she goes, her father gives her a bracelet. It’s that bracelet and that bracelet alone that has a magical component that protects Glenn in this mysterious new land. If she takes it off, there is no knowing what will happen to her.

We think being bound to a magical item would be like having a best-friend necklace, but instead of the necklace being a symbol of your friendship with another human being, the necklace itself would be your best friend. Up for some more totems of mystical protection? We’ve pulled together six totems of protection and magic—vote for your favorite!

Doctor Who — the TARDIS

The Doctor and the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space) share a psychic bond and, as the Neil Gaiman-penned episode “The Doctor’s Wife” made clear, a bit of a flirtation. What do you expect could happen, though, between an ancient alien and his normally non-humanoid police box-slash-space ship?

Harry Potter — Elder Wand

The Elder wand gives unimaginable power to its wielder. Unfortunately, killing the wielder and becoming the new wielder is all it takes to wield the powers of the elder wielder, er wand. We’re confused now.

Charmed — The Book of Shadows

The Book of Shadows seems like it should just be another run-of-the-mill, spell-filled, occult grimoire, and yet! It can shock anyone who tries to access it for the wrong reasons, thwarting many a villain thinking to steal from the Charmed ones.

King Arthur — Excalibur

This sword is not only sharp, shiny, and super styling—it chose the ruler of an entire country. Can you imagine if someone tried to replace America’s Electoral College with a sword? That would not fly! Neither the idea, nor the sword would fly!

Frosty the Snowman — Magic Hat

This hat turned a pile of snow into a walking, talking MAN. That might make this talisman the most powerful, if not the most fun at parties.

Thor — THE HAMMER!

BY THE HAMMER OF THOOOOOR!

  1. Does Percy Jackson’s pen/Riptide count? Because it IS magical protection, and it IS bound to him, because it always returns to him…

    • True, it di say MAGICAL, but it also said TOTEM. A totem is something that symbolizes something, or is closely related to that something. And that does NOT mean magically. For example; Athena’s totem is the owl, because she is associated with it and it relates to her.

I can’t say Percy’s weapon is a totem at all, it may be his trademark, but it doesn’t represent him in a totem way, nor is it real relative besides being a Greek weapon that he uses because he is Greek. Though it is magical protection, it is not a totem. Inception, on the other hand, is close enough. Dom’s totem was the thing that represented his reality, so I’d say it’s a totem, but it isn’t really relative to his being in the spiritual type way, like a totem usually does.
