A Chance to Unremember: Flash-Fiction Contest Winners!

Unremembered by Jessica BrodyUnremembered, by Jessica Brody, begins with a plane crash. No one expects any survivors, but floating among the wreckage is a 16-year-old girl, clinging for her life. The girl—who hospital staff name Violet—has no memory of the crash or her life before it.

For the most part, the idea of losing your memory is pretty scary. But everyone has a few moments they would rather just forget. With this in mind, we challenged you to write about a memory you would like to unremember. You wrote some great stories, and the top ten entries were sent to Jessica Brody for judging! Now, we’re pleased to announce the contest winners!

All three winners will be featured on Jessica Brody’s blog for her special “Unremembered Mondays” feature, alongside some amazing YA authors including: Meg CabotLeigh Bardugo, and Melissa Walker.

Check out the winners below and be sure to congratulate your fellow figs!

Grand Prize

Jessica says: This story gave me chills every time I read it. It’s so impactful. I love all the small details like smells and singing off-key. This is what really brought the narrative to life for me. You have a rare knack for showing a reader what’s in your head. And I love the softness of the opening with mentions of Pride and Prejudice and carefree birthday parties. The contrast with the end is excellent.

Great job, Lieder! You will receive an eReader loaded with Unremembered by Jessica Brody, a Jessica Brody sampler, and exclusive content from Jessica about the book. You will also receive a Figment tote and the chance to choose the Figment homepage stories for one day. Plus, Jessica Brody will feature your story on her blog on Monday, May 13!

And I loved your description of the parents and the drama that you ramped up until the end. Great job!
