Homecoming Short-Story Contest

The days are getting shorter. The leaves are beginning to change colors. The high school football team is in last place. It’s time to experience an adolescent rite of passage: Homecoming.

And while your moves might not be as smooth as Kevin Bacon in Footloose, you don’t need to be an excellent dancer to write a great story about homecoming.

In 400 words or fewer, write a story about homecoming. It can be about the dance, the football game, spirit week, whatever you like! The entry period closes on Wednesday, October 2 at 11:59 p.m. ET. This contest is open to all Figs.

Figment editors will be reading all the entries. Five winners will be featured on the Figment homepage. One grand prize winner will get the chance to choose the homepage stories for one day.

  1. I love that Figment is doing less and less heart based contests. Amazing, guys! Thank you so much, I’ll definitely be entering even more!

  2. My high school had over 4,000 students in it. Homecoming was not a big thing, on the team and their dates attended. So writing a story for this might be a challenge. But challenges are good.

  3. That awkward moment when you’ve never been to prom… and don’t really ever want to… and have never been asked to… except by this creepy guy… yeah

  4. The awkward moment when you went to your sophomore homecoming last year and while it was fun, it was nothing like books and movies portray it, and you’d rather not go with the cliche plot….maybe I’ll do something with spirit week or the football game…I AM in band, after all. Interesting things usually happen in band. xD

  5. My friend went to homecoming last year and was showing me pictures. In the background of every single one someone was twerking, grinding, etc. Welcome to America…
