About the book:

From Frank Portman comes the long-awaited sequel to the beloved cult classic King 910zKVbvTEL._SL1500_Dork, of which John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, said, “Basically, if you are a human being with even a vague grasp of the English language, King Dork will rock your world.”
Aside from the stitches and the head wound, Tom Henderson is the same old King Dork. He’s still trying to work out who to blame for the new scar on his forehead, the memory loss, and his father’s mysterious death. But illicit female hospital visitations, The Catcher in the Rye, and the Hillmont High sex-pocalypse have made him a new man.
What doesn’t make you stronger can kill you, though, and tenth grade, act two, promises to be a killer. Tom’s down one bloodstained army coat, one Little Big Tom, and two secret semi-imaginary girlfriends. Now his most deeply held beliefs about alphabetical-order friendship, recycling, school spirit, girls, rock and roll, the stitching on jeans, the Catcher Code, and the structure of the universe are about to explode in his face. If only a female robot’s notes could solve the world’s problems, he’d have a chance. But how likely is that?
King Dork Approximately–it feels like the first time. Like the very first time.

  1. In the prompt it says the story must be 250 words or fewer, but when it tells you how to enter it says the story can be 500 words or less. Which is correct?

  2. A couple questions:

How is this one judged? (Will you guys read the stories or is it heart-based?)

Can we have more than one entry?

Last one:D – Can I enter a story based on a song even if it isn’t necessarily a song I listen to while writing?

    Thanks! (Please answer:)

    • This contest is not heart based. Each story will be read and judged! You are also welcome to have more than one entry if you’d like and feel free to write about any song! Good luck!

  3. I’m just looking for confirmation as to how many words we write? In the prompt it says ‘in 250 words or fewer,’ yet in the rules it says ‘in 500 words or less.’ Which of these is the one we follow?

  4. Does it have to be 250 words? Cause in the how to enter part it says in 500 words or fewer…just wanna know before I start writing. Please and thank you! 😀

  5. The rules say two different things regarding how long the piece must be. In the prompt it says 250 words or fewer, but under ‘how to enter’ it says 500 words or fewer (well, it says or less, but it should be fewer). So does it have to be 250 words or 500 words?

  6. So excited! Does it have to be a truly favourite song (sorry about my English, I’m from Canada)? I have a few favourite songs, but I believe I can only choose one.

  7. Hi, really intriguing contest as people can write about numerous subjects and each song means something different to that person 🙂

Quick question as I’ve read that you can enter more than once?? If this is true is there a limit of how many times a person can enter? for instance 3 (not saying that I will, but just curious)? Many thanks, Paige x

  8. How closely does the story have to be to the song? Because I wrote something, and it’s connected to my song, but it’s connected in an obscure, abstract way that probably only I would recognize. Is that okay?

  9. How closely does the entry have to resemble the song? Because I wrote something, and it’s inspired by the song, but it’s connected in an obscure, abstract way that probably only I would recognize. Is that okay?

  10. It kinda just flowed into a 500 word story. Would it be okay if I published that and then shortened it and entered the shortened version for the contest?

  11. So..I submitted mine this morning and it’s been about 4 hours. I don’t see mine with the others. Mine is entitled Perfectly Flawed.

  12. I was wondering if you put the lyrics to the song you based your story off of at the end of your story if it would count towards the word limit. I just think it would help the judges out the see the real lyrics to the song and how it reflects the story.

  13. I wanted to know how this works with the submission part. How does it work in detail with the contest entry?
Are we supposed to submit it like a regular story on our profile or..?

    Thank you C:

  14. Hello,

I am new to Figment, and was wondering if this contest is open for International Entries.

This is a great opportunity for aspiring writers. Thank you. 🙂

    • There are no maximums set in our rules. We will be reading and judging each story individually without taking into account who the author is. Good luck!

  15. I am wondering if this contest is also open to international Figgies. I haven’t read any replies regarding this issues from the admin. I just hope this will be clarified by the admin. Thank You! Looking forward to have answer from you guys..

  16. This will sound stupid but since the technical term in the rules confused me…I’m going to ask anyway. I don’t live in US. So, can I join? Because this contest sounds pretty interesting to join.

And the songs chosen don’t have to be English songs right?

  17. GOod day admin. I just recently published my work as an entry to this contest I am not sure if it was posted here because I as tag my work to this contest don’t where to put my response as written in the rule no. 5. “Enter your response by the deadline listed in the prompt.”

can you please help me here?
    thank you..

    • Hi Arthur! As long as you clicked the Details tab of your story and added the tag “KingDork” your story will be entered in the contest. It can take a day or two to show up in the entries list though. Thanks and good luck!

  18. Hello,

I have published and tagged my story but I didn’t get the pop-up and it doesn’t seem to be showing up under the entries tab. Did I do something wrong? Has “Searching for the End of the Universe” been correctly entered? Please let me know so I can figure out if and where I went wrong!

    –Rachel Rauch

    • Hi Rachel! You tagged your story correctly. It can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a day or so to show up in the entries so check back again soon and good luck in the contest!

  19. I do not see my fig, yet it said that it would take most of 1-2 hours. I have waited about 10 hours now, but I still don’t see it. Did I mess up something in tagging it KingDork or anything?

  20. Hi! I was just wondering, does the title of an entry have to be the name of the song that is used, or can it be something else as long as you put the song name in the description?

  21. Hey is it okay that its a little longer then said, i cannot figure out a way to shorten it, but still want to enter even tho its a bit long.

    Inner Reality <

    • I guess it would be okay, but you might want to narrow it down a bit more, unless you want to do everything that band means to you, or what it stands for.

  22. Hey, guys-
I’m super excited for this contest… I’m super anxious, that is… Do you know when the winners will be posted?

    • Whenever Figment feels like. My guess in the next week or so. Take into account that it ended right around Christmas so staff probably had time off and it is not that surprising that it has taken them a bit longer than usual to get through the entries to pick the winners.

  23. I was just curious if I missed something and a winner was announced for this contest or it hasn’t been announced yet? Thanks.
